I'm looking to fill a void in my safe with a bolt rifle in 5.56, 16-20" barrel, detachable box mag, good iron sights (rear receiver mounted aperture, front post) and with the ability to add an intermediate eye relief scope while maintaining the use of the iron sights.
The front runner right now is the Ruger Gunsite Scout but Mossberg has a few candidates, some of which would require add-ons.

The thing I'm not comfortable with on the Mossberg 5.56 rifles is the bolt design which has a little flap "thingie" that allows it to feed from standard AR mags. Even though it's a big selling point, I'm not concerned with that capability but Mossberg hangs their hat on it.

I'd like to know from 5.56 MVP owners what your experience has been and whether you'd consider buying one again or whether you'd go to something else that uses a proprietary mag and has a conventional bolt design. I've done a little preliminary reading on some of the forums and it seems as though there have been more than a few problems with it but I know that you don't often hear from people who are happy and satisfied with a product.
Please don't try to convince me what other brand to buy or talk about other brands. I'm only interested in hearing about the Mossberg 5.56 MVP line.

Thanks in advance for any info you might be able to offer.

Head over the the Mossberg MVP forum and you'll find it's not a problem. I have a 5.56 and am going to pick up the 7.62 model some day.+8

I have shot mine in friendly competitions against M-4's and I have beat them.
LOVE the mag speed changes and the accuracy of this rifle.

I also passed on it due to the "flipper". Obviously it isn't an issue, but it didn't seem like a particularly strong design at the time.

I got one for use when my grandson would get old enough to use it. It digested any and everything I ever ran through it and with surprising accuracy. Kept it about 2 years and sold it when my Grandson's dad got him into AR's. (at age 4!). Didn't really have a use for it. I would own one again if I needed or wanted one.

I bought a used one a while back, and while it worked great with the original mag, some AR mags seemed to hang up.
I finally figured out that if I pulled the mags back, the bolt would catch on the edge of the mag, but if I pushed the mag forward, it cleared fine.
Way too much movement of some mags while some worked fine.
I bought a Tromix aluminum replacement magwell and that solved the problem.
Now it's fun and reliable.

When I first saw the carbine I wanted one, then I got to handle one and saw the bolt and decided to pass.
The gun is somewhat hyped as a robust SHTF rifle but the design doesn't give confidence.

I too have the 5.56 Predator model. It seems fine, but do not expect Remington Or Winchester smooth bolt action. There is a "hitch" when the bolt picks up the cartridge. My barrel coppered badly until I ran a Tubbs final finish series thru it.

It is fine now. Handy field rifle.

I have the 308 and it is solid and accurate. Only complaint I have really is that the ring sight is so low that it will not co-witness. Could do with a 3 slot rail on the fore end so that I can fit an AR front sight. It really does meet the Scout definition. You can shoot pretty fast for a bolt-action.

Considered the Mossberg but bought a CZ 527 Carbine instead because I preferred the "mini Mauser" bolt design.

I have a 308 with a vortex 3-9 scope I bought separately. I have put 100 ads through so far and it has been faultless.
