Please bestow your wisdom upon me. I am getting a new rifle and being a tightwad I will choose between two rifles which are the Mossberg 100ATF or the Savage Axis. Which would you choose and why. Thanks for your suggestions. It will be a .270W.

Depends on what you wanna do, but I generally like the Savages.

I have two Axis rifles and a 111. The Axis rifles are great shooters, and have a growing aftermarket. Boyd's and SSS makes a laminate stock for it now, you can use 111 barrels, and they now come with the AccuTrigger. Flimsy stock, but in my own use, it's not been a big issue. If you want to stiffen it up, then a $100 Boyd's stock would do fine.

I have not shot either one. However, when I was looking into a similar purchase a few months ago, I was HIGHLY impressed with the 100ATR--much more so than I anticipated. On the other hand, the Axis did not impress me at all. The caveat, of course, is that how they shoot is the most important--and I don't know which is better in that area.

If you want an after market stock and trigger a Stevens 200 is a low end Savage, I've seen the used under $250

dprice3844444, I read the reviews you suggested and after reading them, I decided to purchase neither. I think I'll save my money and get a Model 70 Winchester. There were to many negative reviews about the Mossberg and too many complaints about the Axis's trigger. Thanks to all of you for your replies.

Dicks is selling the Savage 111 with Accutrigger and Nikon scope for $420. You cannot beat that.

I wasn't aware that the Axis 2 has the accutrigger. That may be a game changer. Academy advertised the Axis for about 275$, but I don't know whether that was for the Axis 2 or not. How do you tell the difference? Is it on the rifle? They may be trying to get rid of the older model Axis. I will check out the Weatherby I do like their stock. I will also check out the T/C venture. I have read good things about it.

Yeah, if you look at the Axis II, the trigger will have a little blade coming out of it. The Axis I won't have that.

Axis II:

The Axis II with scope usually hovers around $350-$375, but there's a $50 rebate on the Axis I & II rifles. So you could come out paying just a few bucks more than you'd planned.

I liked the ATR better than the Savage

The Axis 30-06 really sent waves down the stock when I shot it. I sold it. The Mossberg .308 is accurate and solid. I really like its accuracy. with a 3x9 buckmaster, this is a great field gun.
