Mossberg Patriot 7MM PRC......

Yeah I have wondered why they don't open up a "custom" shop type thing like Remington used to do?
I agree! Remington offered lefthanded models in their stock catalog. Plus the custom shop for dangerous game models and higher end rifles.
I would love a 375 Ruger in a $600-$700 rifle. It's hard for me to spend $2000 on a rifle that will only be used a few times a year.

IMHO, you’ve got a lot of rifle for the $$$ invested there. Those vortex scopes are nice! Just an FYI, they do a scheels exclusive RAGE series, that is essentially improved glass in a more simple scope. Also impressive for the money. I have a 4x12 crossfire2. Impressive for their price point. I just saw one of those bushnells… might have to try one out.
I still am happy that we have so many budget rifle options that perform so well!

I’m just wowed at the weight (or rather lack thereof). That’s a good looking rifle and looking forward like so many to a range report.
Yeah 7.1lbs for a walnut stock is pretty good!! My custom walnut stock Remington 700 25-06 is like almost 10lbs with a scope I think. My Patriot Predator 6.5 PRC with the synthetic Strata camo stock is a bit over 7lbs with a scope IIRC? It's really light...
@LoonWulf what scale is that? I've been wanting a half decent accuracy scale for lighter objects like rifles as a typical bathroom scale is only designed to be accurate at typical human body weight lol.

Scale just a cheap Walmart cooking scale, but its pretty accurate. Ill go look and see if theres a brand name on it in a few.

I forgot i took pictures of the barreled action weight.

Ill grab a complete weight also.

Dang you Loonwulf, now I want one too!

Sorry!...........

Not sorry! :p

Another "cheap" option is Savage, they list a few 375 Ruger rifles in the 5-700 dollar range. They will also do "custom" builds.

Could also grab an older flat back off GunBroker or somewhere, and screw a 200 dollar shaw tube on.

Ya know im gonna go do some measuring and comparing of stuff between the Patriot and my Savage. I know the barrels are the same thread (as are Remington 783s, and a few others) but im not sure about bolt face depths etc.

Thanks ill take a look!

I agree its nice that we have more options for affordable bolt rifles now than we did previously....even when i started shooting in the late 90s.

Ive been quite happy with most of the budget rifles ive used/owned, most of the budget scopes also. There are a few that im not a huge fan of, but primarily thats personal preferences/opinion.

I see it says Taylor in this pic. I'll look around at the usual places for something similar.

So since we are driving off into budget rifles in general. Would you guys think it would be better to jump on one of these Mossbergs or move over to a Savage/Ruger or wait for Tika to come out with a 7prc? My wife's Tika is really nice but I have this weird thing about having guns that look to similar in my stable, just boring to look at.

So its really hard for me to say this one or that one are BEST, because they are all compromises with regards to my personal preferences.

The Mossberg has the most "features" of the budget rifles, but they are also rougher around the edges than anything besides an AXIS, which dosent come in 7PRC. That said if you want nice wood, its really your only budget option. If your willing to do some polishing, and are either OK with the rough exterior or are willing to paint it ( could also pay more for the factory cerakoted option), they offer a great bang for the buck.

The Ruger American would be my choice in the 500-600 dollar range if your NOT looking for a wood stock. AFAIK they only come in the Go Wilds right now, which are Cerakoted. This fixes the finish issues that the RAs sometimes have. The only knock I can give the RAs is that none of the 7mms I've seen have been fantastically accurate, very acceptable, but nothing spectacular. The other Calibers have all been more impressive.....could just be luck of the draw tho, I've only had 1 and shot 2 or 3 other .284 bore Americans. Still, your paying more for similar feel and performance to the cheaper Patriot (IMO).

Savage would be in here somewhere, primarily because of the action length (action is 3.75" so beter suited to larger longer cartridges IMO) and firing system quirks (small double firing pin spring and UL firing pin). They will also run you about the same or more than an upscale American or a Standard Howa/WBY. Still a solid option, just not quite the fit "I" would want for the cartridge.

Personally, and if staying factory, Id either go with the cheapest option if all you want to do is try out the round, or Id wait for Howa/R77/Tikka to drop what you want if looking for something a bit nicer.

Theres also psuedo customs.....just slapping a barrel on any action that will take a 7mm or 300wm......that can be pretty affordable.

ya know.....the 7mm PRC and .375 Ruger are the only cartridges that make the T3xs interesting to me. Perfect fits IMO.....

I use one similar to this. Mine has a hook instead of the strap. I like it really well. Not trying to hijack a thread. Just… you know… gun room gadgets.

Thats a neat one....i might need to get one of those, they would be great for checking the draw weight on my bows too!

I made it to the range for a little while today. I had to sight my dads Grendel, my 7-08, and mess with the PRC, so time was limited.

Chronographing was abbreviated but as follows

RET

70gr (5rnds)
Avg 2866, high 2871, low 2855, ES 16

70.5 (5rnds)
Avg 2895, high 2901, low 2890, ES 11

Those were the only full sets I got to shoot. The other 3 charges just had a single round fired due to time.

71
2918

71.5
2949

72
2976

Heres the bulk target picture for the day. The shots on the bottom left and right were the 7-08....No adjustments, I think i might have a scope failure. Top left was sighting my dads Grendel. The PRC is straight up the middle (first shot bulls eye!) then adjusted up for about a 1.5" high zero...(actualy 2" for some reason I was thinking that 2 squares was 1.5)....should put me pretty close at 200. Which is where Ill finalize zero.
PXL_20230717_004317549.jpg

and the last 3 shots .5 gr difference.
PXL_20230717_004319926.jpg

I expect better precision in the future, nothing about my support or position was consistent today. Still its shooting pretty well.

My Patriot Predator in 6.5 PRC and patriot in 270 Winchester both shoot really well. I'm still debating selling the 270 as I think I'm going to stick with the 6.5 PRC... The only thing is I have a crap load of 270 ammo and brass and powder specifically for it...
I'd be interested in buying the .270 ammo, brass and reloading stuff. PM me if you decide to.

I think you will really like the 6.5 PRC. I've been shooting a couple chassis rifles out to 1300 yards for about a year now and really, really like the extra juice over the Creeedmoor.
