so im getting a Mossberg 500 and i am torn between getting the regular finish or the mariner finish. the only hitch i have is that the black matte finish has a combo with a 18&1/2 in. and a 28 in. barrels (at $359) and the mariner has only the 18&1/2 in barrel (at $419). i dont mind the price so much. but i REALLY want a 28 in barrel in marine finish. because i dont want a two tone gun. does anybody know?

black matte in my opinion i have heard of plenty of people keeping regular blued winchesters etc. on boats as long as you oil properly salt water shouldn't be an issue

I'm assuming you would be having the finish applied to the barrel by a aftermarket finishing shop? I don't think Mossberg makes any of their longer tubes in that finish. Is this gun actually going to be used in a marine environment? If not I would go with the combo you mentioned in blued steel and buy a bottle of Eezox to wipe it down with occasionally. It won't rust if you keep a very thin coat of that stuff on it every few months.

I'll admit, I think the mariner version looks just great. However, from a practical perspective, unless you're going to be using it in a marine environment, it most likely isn't going to be worth the extra cost. The parkerized finish will do you just fine in that case.

The mariner looks nice, but Id go with black matte. Also, isnt the Mariner sporting a nickel finish? I could be wrong. But, if Im not, Im under the impression that nickel is somewhat finicky when it comes to various solvents/cleaners. Plus, Id imagine such a barrel would cost more if one were inclined to replace it one day.

Regardless, after all is said and done, for shotguns, I simply prefer all black.

I don't think the Mariner has a nickel finish, but rather some sort of silver colored coating over the steel, not a metal plating.

I would not bother with the marine coat, unless you plan on using it in a moist environment, or you really like the look. The black matte finish should work just fine as long as you keep oil on it, plus the lower cost is nice.
