SO I just recently purchased a new Mossberg 500 with wood stock/forend, 28 inch ported barrel, and its gotta blue finish. That last part is where my problem lies, the barrel and receiver gets riddled with fingerprints whenever I handle it. I want to get a new finish put on it but I have no clue how to go about doing that, will I need a new receiver and barrel? I have been doing some research about cerakoting and parkerization but really dont know what they do and the price on either, so really all I am looking for is more of a matte color that will not get fingers all over it... Thanks in advance!

I know you want to fondle your new gun and it gets finger prints on the barrel where you touch it but so what. Simply wipe them off with an oily rag or a silicon impregnated gun cloth by Outer before putting it up. Lot cheaper than spending $100 for a new finish on the barrel.

Perspiration from finger prints and handling can cause rust spots if left on the gun for long period but it takes 5 seconds to wipe the barrel down to get rid of them. After a while your gun will sit for months or years without being handled and if lightly oiled will not have any problems with rust or corrosion if stored in a dry location.

Steve C said most of what I came here to say too.

That said, if you really want to refinish it, keep in mind that the receiver is aluminum - it won't rust, but it won't take parkerizing, either. I think your only option would be a spray-on coating like duracoat.

Parkerizing eats aluminum. Don't go there.

Before making any changes on a new firearm, I'll make two suggestions.... wash your hands, and wipe down your gun.

I have a Mossy 500 that I've had at least 25 years. Like all the above posts, keep it wiped down after use and you'll be GTG.

Yeah the thing is, I'm not concerned about it fouling up, I'm doing it more for aesthetics just because I don't like the look, so would just duracoating be fine in that case,
It couldn't make it corrode any quicker could it?
