Still modern day. ....those who live in CCW states, businesses that don't want firearms on their property typically post silhouette images of the 1911 or S&W N-frame.
"What world wide militaries or LEAs issue Lugers?"
Very tempted to say "NYPD," but I thought better of it (oh, wait...)
Stoky,
That picture just made me wonder; why doesn't someone attach a gatling-gun-looking crown to the front of their funny-car blower spool?
"I knew what a "German Luger" was long before I knew any other semi-auto pistol."
Same here. In fact, the Tales of the Gun episode on the Luger's operation is my first memory of being interested in firearms engineering.
Admittedly the Luger has a great deal of positive qualities, but I'd say they are not "iconic" . Their appeal is mostly "collectible, exotic, or historic". Personally, I like Lugers from an economically estrangement prospective. Heck, I used to own two DWM's, one 7.65mm and a 9mm.
Operationally, they are mechanically weak and flawed, compared to 1911's and most modern day semi's. Show me a person who prefers it for self defense (civilian) or police/military, and I'll logically suggest him for a pscho/evaluation.
What modern day military or police organization currently uses Lugers ?
I'd say they (Lugers) are "kaput" !
(But I'd still like to have one!)
