I agree, that flat point in that big case gives you a certain level of confidence. It's balanced. And interestingly, I have several boxes of it, but no gun for it!
Thanks to Inebriated for getting this thread started! Personally I like a good looking rifle case to have very little body taper and a fairly sharp shoulder. I think that is the reason I prefer 308 to 30-06, because it has a sharper shoulder and the case is a little bit shorter. The Hornady handbook has the 308 winchester on the cover (correct me if I'm wrong) and I think they made the right choice.
I would really like to like the 223 remington, but the throat is too short. I have never seen the 6.5x55 but I think that is a very good looking cartridge. The 5.7x28 wins for me in the cuteness category.
HisStigness: I believe the cartridge on the cover of the Hornady manual is a 6.5 Creedmore.
I agree with Stophel and M70 both. The 7x57 and 6.5x55 both have almost perfect proportions for a rifle cartridge. I also think that there's something classically awesome about the 30-30 with a flat-nosed bullet. It looks like it means all business.
I stand corrected, I thought that shoulder angle was a little sharp for a 308 but I couldn't figure out what it was. All I thought when I bought the book was "man, that is a good looking round!" It would make sense that hornady would put their own cartridge on the cover of their load manual.
