Idea credited to HisStigness.

Post your most visually-appealing cartridges.

For me, the credit has to go to .30-06 Springfield. Extra credit given if 8 of them are in an en bloc clip.

Honorable mentions:
.45 ACP
.45-70 Government
.50 BMG (for shear imposing size).

I think .357 SIG is an interesting and pleasingly shaped cartridge. Now I just have to get one for the collection.

I agree, that flat point in that big case gives you a certain level of confidence. It's balanced. And interestingly, I have several boxes of it, but no gun for it!

5.7x28 is the cutest, and I think GP11 7.5x55 Swiss has the most graceful bullet ogive

7mm Mauser. Besides being the perfect rifle cartridge, it also has the perfect visual proportions. It's what a rifle cartridge should look like. ;)

I would agree with the 30-06. Winchester silver tips in en bloc clips. Second would be 7.62x25

For me it's the .280 Remington

The .30-06 has just a tad too thick a bullet, and the .270 just a tad too thin. ;)

Why a 4 bore of course. A real man's gun, you will not see any of these in the wimpy "I can't take recoil" threads.

Thanks to Inebriated for getting this thread started! Personally I like a good looking rifle case to have very little body taper and a fairly sharp shoulder. I think that is the reason I prefer 308 to 30-06, because it has a sharper shoulder and the case is a little bit shorter. The Hornady handbook has the 308 winchester on the cover (correct me if I'm wrong) and I think they made the right choice.

I would really like to like the 223 remington, but the throat is too short. I have never seen the 6.5x55 but I think that is a very good looking cartridge. The 5.7x28 wins for me in the cuteness category.

I think 8mm Mauser and .308 both have a very nice proportion to them.

I also like long-neck, long-bullet combos for appearance like the 6mm Lee Navy, 5.45x39, and the experimental 6x45 SAW round that never came to be.

HisStigness: I believe the cartridge on the cover of the Hornady manual is a 6.5 Creedmore.

I agree with Stophel and M70 both. The 7x57 and 6.5x55 both have almost perfect proportions for a rifle cartridge. I also think that there's something classically awesome about the 30-30 with a flat-nosed bullet. It looks like it means all business.

I stand corrected, I thought that shoulder angle was a little sharp for a 308 but I couldn't figure out what it was. All I thought when I bought the book was "man, that is a good looking round!" It would make sense that hornady would put their own cartridge on the cover of their load manual.
