Me too, as I’ve sold a few things to help fund it. But I think I’ll be very pleased with it, but at the same time it’s been on my mind for several years it’s got an uphill battle to meet preconceived expectations. Maybe I set myself up for failure.
You need to disassociate yourself from anyone who has this unwarranted bias. Life is too short to contend with this type of negativity

I too gravitate towards the worthless, outdated, garbage Leupold products. I foolishly bought a VX-6 2-12x42 for my 7 mag Browning X-Bolt. Funny thing, even though the glass sucks I can clearly see well past legal shooting light, even with my 69 year old eyes.

FWIW....few years ago at the LGS I looked thru a VX-R side by side against an equivalent Swarovski. Same magnification range, same size objective. Took a lot of time adjusting the focus. I went in with the firm belief that I was gonna own a Swaro before the day was done. Ended up that the Leupold was actually very marginally clearer both to me and to the owner of the LGS, plus the Leupold had Firedot (which I VERY highly recommend for hunting) and was about 1/2 the cost. Idiot that I am, I bought the clearer American made product for 1/2 the price.

Also, My friend had been to an open house at Cabelas earlier and talked with a Leupold rep. Topic of reliability came up. IIRC, Leupold rep said most European scopes take about 25 g’s before the internals/reticule shakes loose. Leupold usually takes about 50 g’s

Just grabbed some weights from my sized, and primed, cases. I couldnt find any remingtons in my pile of fired brass, so they maybe in another bucket.
Anyway
Fed case weight 205gr, water capacity to overflow (tap water) 71.5gr
Hornady Case weight 184, water capacity to overflow, 73.1

Interestingly the .30-06AI cases came out to almost the same numbers, 70.9 and 73.3 respectively.

I just weighed a rem 30 Gibbs case 197.8 filled 271.8 so 74.0 if I can math right.

interesting, I figgured the difference would be more..... The nosler 06 i have is 194ish, and 68.5

wait, sorry bad data, not sure what that's from.....Nosler 06 brass fresh, 177.7 and 69.5gr of water.

I might try turning some of this nosler brass into .280AI just to see what the capacity ends up at.

@<*(((>< , any updates on your new rifle? I'm looking forward to seeing some results.

I just received 250 Barnes .30 cal 175gr LRX bullets today and am hoping to have the barrel screwed on in a couple weeks. I'm going to work up two loads, one using the 175gr LRX for hunting, and the other using 178gr A-MAX for practice, etc. Both will use Lapua brass, Federal Match primers and most likely Varget. Sorry if I missed it but what components are you considering for your M70 Proof?

Wish I have better news for you but at my point in life, my time is what I would call, “not my own.” Having three kids 8 and under, a business to run and a home remodel project in the works of which I’m doing the work, I had the bright idea of attempting a one off rifle and load development.

So unfortunately I have not moved any further along with the project other than getting the stock painted and buying a 20MOA rail for it. I’m waiting for a one day sale at our local farm and ranch store so I can buy a Leupold VX6 HD 3-18x44mm for 30% off.

I have accumulated some .284 projectiles off @Newtosavage so I do have some 162gr ELD-X, 139 gr Interbond, 139 SST’s and some Speers. I’ll use some of the speers for fire forming and sighting in.

I’ll definitely be working up some loads for the 162 ELD-X’s, and will also get some 160 Nosler Partitions (Elk load), and some 168 and 175’s to try out at some long distance targets.

It’s throated for 160 class bullets, so we’ll see how it all shakes out but I’ll be honest with my life stage, time is a scarce commodity. Be Patient!

I think ive still got some 168ABLRs.....and maybe a few others if you want more options.....

I might hit you up for a few to see how she likes them. If there is any of the above I mentioned that interest you let me know. It’s nice to try without committing to a box of projectiles, but with 7mm’s they’ll bound to be used someday as I’m a 7mm fan.

will do!
Im still trying to come up with an alternative to rl-23 in my AIs, so will be working with what Ive got for a bit.

Thanks for the complements to all...

I like how it turned out. I lightly sanded the stock to rough it up, then cleaned it with some brake cleaner. After that it got sprayed with the light tan, followed by the brown and green random stripes, then used a set of natural sponges with the same spray paints just sprayed in puddles on cardboard to dab into. After it dried I used a two part spray can of automotive clear coat, really good stuff. There is a valve on the bottom of the van you puncture to start the mixture then you have about 24 hours to use it up. The clear coat is spendy, like $18-20 on amazon but seems really good.

I dropped the receiver off to Proof yesterday since the barrel is done. I did some prep work while I had the chance which included lapping the bolt lugs and softening some sharp edges. I should be able to pick up the barreled action in about a week and a half.

I picked up the barreled action from Proof this afternoon. I have some good factory ammunition to try first before I start load development using the Barnes 175gr LRX and Hornady 178gr A-MAX bullets. I'll shoot this weekend and then consider whether or not I want to bed the action or at the very least the recoil lug. I'll most likely start a new thread for this build.
