Moving to Tennessee!!!

I’m moving from GA to TN here shortly, inside of 30 days and I was wondering if someone could give me the inside scoop on the actual CCW laws.

I have a GA handgun permit.

Also I am a cop in GA and will be changing employment to LE in TN shortly after I move.

Looking forward to living in TN and serving the fine folks of Metro Nashville as a LEO!

TheFederalistWeasel, what part of TN are you moving to? I looked at moving out of Illinois, and TN was one of the states I looked at. They have cheap land compared to IL.

Metro Nashville
:barf:

Find another PD to work for.

Any other.

The handgun carry permit requirements in TN are much like that in GA. I expect that you GA permit will no longer be valid when you move since your official residence is no longer GA. It will take as much as 6 weeks and as little as 11 days for your TN permit. During that time you won't be able to carry legally.

Metro Nashville

If that the city from the movie The Firm? I think it was Nashville, it looked like a beautiful southern city! I've never made it out that way, but one event I'm planning on next may is the national BBQ cooking contest. I hear they have a huge weekend BBQ event with the best ribs, pulled pork, and other BBQ.

Nashville is not the Nashville I knew while in college there.

It's been destroyed by a bunch of liberal, yuppie types, largely from California. I know, cause I lived in The Valley in California, too.

Now, if you want Tennessee, move to the Cumberlands. (I lived there 7 years.) Or the Smokies.

The good news, is we have fewer no-carry zones than your old home. Also, a lawyer told me something very interesting about police in TN. Unless they are actively doing their job, they are subject to the no-carry restrictions. (Even if it is just taking a lunch break in a restaurant that serves alcohol.) True, it is never enforced, but I always find that slightly interesting.

Either way, hope you get involved and make things better.

Good luck in your new job. I think you will love Nashville. It is a very livable city.
What type of police work will you be doing?

I'm not a native Tennesseean, I'm a Marylander, wife is a Memphian, which is why I'm here now. But let me say that I prefer Tennessee over Maryland any day especially regarding their laws or better put, lack of them. Tennessee is still the south and the laws reflect that. That being said, I wouldn't be a cop anywere, I went through a reserve police/sheriff's academy while stationed in CA and after that experience realized that I didn't want to be a babysitter for a bunch of grown-ups.
My personality would have made me not a just a cop, but the judge, jury and executioner. Screw letting the guilty feed off the law-abiding populaces dollar for a 100 years while the bleeding hearts appeal their sentences. But that's just me, but anyway, welcome to Tennessee!

Can't carry in state parks etc, places that serve alcohol, court house, school property or the other places disallowed by federal law. Costs maybe $50 per four years or something reasonable, I forget details (fee for using 2nd amendment...we pay for the rest via federal and state taxes). Took two months to obtain mine even though the FBI already had the scoop on me. Plus a course in firearm safety and laws for $x. Issued at the drivers license bureau, so easy to pick up.
Welcome to a favorite son from the state charged with storing the tail of the Appalachians. Oh yeah, a native here.

Memphis, not Nashville. I lived in Memphis from '99 until about two months ago, when I relocated to Minnesota for a new job. I really liked Memphis a lot.

The BBQ event you're thinking of is the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, aka "The Superbowl of Swine", "The College of Pig Knowledge", "The Granddaddy of Grills" or just "The Largest Pork Barbecue Cooking Contest on the Planet." It is indeed a whole lot of fun. It's the third weekend in May every year, in Tom Lee Park on the Mississippi. Riverfront Drive is shut down for a week, huge tents go up, and 100,000 people come from all over the world for it. It's a big, big party, and the food is unbelievable. There are separate divisions for pork ribs, pork shoulder, patio porkers (amateurs) and my favorite -- the whole hog competition. Definitely go some year. Stay at the Peabody Hotel, enjoy great blues and booze on Beale Street, and take a trip over to Graceland where you can see the backyard shooting range used by Elvis and his buddies.

Tennessee is very gun friendly, of course. A Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit (HCP) is relatively easy to get. Rangemaster Academy in Memphis is a well known and highly regarded training site, and owner/lead instructor Tom Givens has written numerous books and taught all over the world. The Memphis Sport Shooting Association is a private gun club on the east side that has excellent facilities, including covered rifle lines up to 600 yards, trap, skeet, wobble trap, action pistol and cowboy action ranges, and even a nice sporting clays course.

Wait...

So as a LEO, you don't have unrestricted nationwide carry???

Or are you just asking for academic purposes?

We do, I think...

But I have always held myself to the same laws everyone else has to follow, its only fair.

Your GA license will be good for 6 months after you establish residency in Tennessee. According to http://www.state.tn.us/safety/handgun/apprequirements.htm#GA, you'll need to take a TN Department of Safety-approved handgun safety course, then you'll be able to get your TN license issued as a renewal for $50. Your receipt (+ your GA license) serves as a temporary license until your permanent one arrives in the mail. I just went thru this process a couple of months ago with a Michigan license.

By the way, welcome to Tennessee!

TennTucker - with a MI CPL, you won't need to take a class. Just go to the proper driver's license office in your county (not all of them do CPL's), fill out a form, pay the lady $50 and walk out with your temp license.

And welcome back to Tennessee!

Welcome to Tennessee!

Georgia and TN laws are somewhat similar, with Georgia's being slightly more lenient. You'll like TN if you liked GA ; 95% nice people, 3% not too bright and a final 2% pure mean ol' bad people. Fortunately for your line of work, most of the bad people are usually dumb.

Welcome! From a TN gun guy!

:)

The only thing I can see about the Tennessee CCW laws/restrictions are the no guns allowed where open alcohol is served. This needs to be changed to the 51% rule. I don't drink, but I love to eat.:p
