The CDC keeps statistics of pretty much every aspect of human health in America including causes of death and injury catalogued by method of injury, as well as every other measure that you could possibly imagine. This is an invaludable service that WE can use to dispell a lot of the crap esoused by the brady bunch (as evidenced by this recent thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=135111 )

Do not blame the CDC because "Some sociologists" (notice that they arent even willing to identify themselves or theit institution, that is how much faith they have in their own claims) have decided that the numbers they recorded mean something that was not inferred. Remember that the CDC itself made no assertions as to the cause of the increase. In typical sociologist fasion we have a couple of academics who take a miniscule amount of data and decide to pervert it into some validation for their pre-existing hair brained theories.

The CDC has tried in the past to go well beyond merely collecting data regading firearms deaths in the US. It has tried to actively propagandize the issue by making recommendations for strict gun control laws. The problem was bad enough for Congress to prohibit the CDC from doing anything that would relate to promotion of gun control.

What you're seeing with these slanted studies funded by the CDC is their ignoring of the restrictions on their ability to promote gun control.

From the CDC website:

The Department of Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2003 (H.R. 246) contains modified language from the initial gun control restriction language in fiscal year 1997. The modified language is included below:

“Provided further, That none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used, in whole or in part, to advocate or promote gun control . . .â€
(Source: H.R. 246; bold added)

http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/res-opps/restrictions.htm

Slanting the data to demonize guns is apparently OK though...and..oops!..looks at who's violating the law:
The CDC said it hoped that its report would lead to a better understanding of personal and social risk factors for violence and help spur development of prevention programs.

""..help spur development of prevention programs".
Gee, I wonder if that would include more gun control? :cuss:

Some sociologists have tied rising murder and suicide rates to changes in the economy as well as a greater availability of drugs and guns.

Economy, I can kinda sorta believe. Guns, no. The amount of guns available from this point last year should have no real changes on crime. Maybe if guns were just legalized last year, I could believe it, but no.
