Most animals when shot do tend to move a distance and Some DRT. A 12g slug can have the “move a distance” happen, I’ve seen it.
So if A 12g slug is what you use that’s fine…. And that’s very common or at least was for a long time prior to the straight wall cartridge switch many states Did.
Compare what your using to a 1oz slug at around 1250fps. If your using a cartridge more powerful, then yes your probably on the cusp of Over kill . Yet for many years in my state everyone used a 12g or smaller slug and no one considered that as to much.
Keep in mind and for perspective- It’s a suggestion that Brown Bear and Grizzly Defense in a suitable Pump 12g with Brenneke Black magic ammo be used.
I like over kill- Less tracking….And my 375 Weatherby & .58 Double muzzleloader assist in that.
