'Tween swamp and sun!
Debated long and hard as to build or buy an AR. I see the prices are back to around normal (with some good buys to be found) and I've started shopping for complete rifles. The all-black didn't do anything for me so, I think about the additional cost of changing furniture, etc. Now, the cost starts to creep significantly, and I'll have a bunch of bits sitting around not being used. Remember, the reason I'd change them is because I don't LIKE them. :scrutiny:

So, then I think about assembling one. The benefits were that I could build it EXACTLY like I wanted. Now, the issue is that I've not received my AR-decoder ring and for a guy who doesn't dwell in the SOCOM halls of fame, how would I know if the parts I'd be assembling would be compatible? I know, research, research, research.

I have a day-job, a growing family and I can keep pretty busy on my own without throwing the attempt of getting a doctorate in AR assembly so, buying a complete gun or assemblies starts to rise to the surface as a good route to take. But, can I find an upper and lower assembly that is built with my tastes in mind? With some patience, the answer is yes. I've always liked Dark Earth grips and stocks, and doubt that I'd ever find myself fighting off bad guys in a sandbox somewhere, so a forward assist and dust cover wasn't necessary. Plus, lighter is always a plus. I found a complete Palmetto State lower with Dark Earth furniture for a good price. So I jumped on it. Even shipped and tax, tag and title included at my FFL, it was cheaper than at the LGS.

For the upper, I searched around and found one that had what I wanted, without a lot that I didn't. It DOES still have the forward assist and dust cover, but having it there isn't a deal breaker. It has a 1:8 barrel that isn't an M4 profile. I just don't see me launching any grenades any time soon so the "M4 notch" in the barrel just didn't appeal to me. Maybe it's my "traditional gun" roots starting to surface. :neener: I also didn't desire a "flash hider". Never worked security at a mall so I'm not sure that it was necessary for me. Not poking at anyone, just would rather not have it on my rifle. I wanted a smaller scope or optic, so a front sight wasn't necessary or desired but I know there needs to be a gas block up there anyway, so if it served as a nice spot for a bi-pod, that's a plus! No need for a rail on top of it, but at least it wouldn't stick up into my view!

I found what I was looking for in a Surplus Ammo & Arms complete upper assembly. It has a Heavy Barrel, a Dragon's Head muzzle brake (no flash hider), Magpul Dark Earth hand guard, Mid-length gas system and a nickel boron bolt carrier, which I thought was a nice touch to snazzy up the ol' girl and bring it one step further from a "nasty black rifle".

Anyways, I found what I was looking for without having to swap around a lot of other parts. I still have room to add on or change some things and, I didn't have to break the bank to do it. The reviews on the components I've chosen all appear to be positive, so I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with the way it will all fit and function and the combination is initially assembled by folks who DO know what they're doing! I just received the upper and I'm still waiting for the lower to arrive. Once it does, I'll have a chance to take it out for a range review. Till then, I get to stare at the parts. Thanks to this thread, so do you! :D

Hope you like 'em!

Congrats! I hope you enjoy the sum of your parts, and continue posting pics of the completed project!
I'd recommend a set of back up irons just in case your battery runs low or something and you still want to plink. Nothing crazy obviously since you wanted to keep it simple, but a well priced polymer pair can be found fairly easily.
Again, congrats and enjoy!

I like that linear comp. Looks a little more sedate and grown up than the Claymore I put on my first build. Let us know how it works.

I wouldn't use a gas block as a mounting point for a bipod. If you want a bipod you would be better off using a free float rail and attaching it to that.

Agree with skywalk, the bipod should not be attached directly to the barrel (gas block)...take a look at the ALG Defense ergonomic rail..inexpensive and looks to be a solid mount but most rails will require a low profile gas block.

Just to clarify this for the OP: You won't hurt anything if you attach your bipod to the gas block (and therefore to the barrel). The reason they're advising against it is because it will change your bullet's point-of-impact slightly. It also might hurt accuracy a little if you don't always put the same amount of pressure on the bipod.

Me, I don't see a problem with it unless you're trying to be as accurate as possible. For general plinking use, you might not ever notice the difference. My only issue with bipods on ARs is that they add bulk and weight, especially when it's a lighter-weight rifle. Most people who put bipods on their ARs end up taking them off pretty quickly.

Thanks for the input everyone. Definitely going to keep that all in mind, once I get my lower, of course. :D

Funny, I was just looking at my bro-in-law's AR (he has a vertical grip on his gun) and mentioned how the additional grip always seemed to be where I wanted to put my hand. I explained how I REALLY didn't want one of those on my rifle. I get the idea of the hidden tripod though. I just don't want to put up with the grip, to get the pod once in a while. Sand bags would be a better alternative for me.

Now, I'm just trying to be satisfied with shooting my other guns until the lower shows up! :banghead:

The upper looks good so far. I'd also suggest having some sort of folding backup sights just in case. The Magpul MBUS in FDE would be a good inexpensive and functional sights.

Good luck with the rest of the build.

Don't forget to buy mags and ammo too while they are cheap and available =]

Well son, you ain't got no lug fer yer pig sticker!

Looks good so far, I've always like the dark earth as well and am considering it for my next build. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Just got notification that the lower is shipped! :D

Shouldn't be too long and we'll have ourselves another completed AR build (sort of). :)

Then, to find out if it's a SUCCESSFUL one.

Looking forward to it!

(and yeah, Harrod. pig-stickers weren't real big in my formative years so, obviously, I don't have an affinity for them.)

Received the lower and it looks nice! Now, being my first AR, I can't say that with authority, but there are a few things that I noticed.

It fits very nicely with the SAA upper. I have seen some ARs where there is a larger than expected gap between the upper and lower. The fit of these two parts (IMHO) shows the quality of each item. Kudos to both manufacturers.

Also noted that the PSA lower assembly has the PSA logo on the buffer tube plunger. Nice touch.

Being my first AR, I wanted to go with complete assemblies so that all the parts are installed correctly (and it was safe to assume that they would all be IN there). Mission accomplished. I think the ol' girl looks pretty good, and turned out just like I had anticipated. Now to get out to the range and see how she shoots!

Got a chance to take it to the range today. Happy to say that it ran without a hiccup. I'm not totally sold on the optic that is on it yet but the gun seemed to be pretty consistent at 50 yards. Had several ragged holes. :D

I took a bunch of factory ammo to make sure that everything would run okay before trying some reloads. After a box of factory stuff, I tried some of my own and it liked them as well. I shot some home-brew 55gr as well as a few 69-grainers that I whipped up. The gun seemed to like the lower charges so I'll probably focus on a lower powder charge and see how it groups with a little more focus.

All in all, it was a good day. My brother spotted for me (since my eyes are in NO way good enough to see a .22-sized hole at over 10 yards! and we almost had the range to ourselves. As an added plus, we walked home with more brass than we came with!
