Hello.

Just thought I would start off a topic with a few pictures of my gun SD gun.

These are obviously some pretty bad pictures, although it seems like every other picture is much more clear in comparison. I never took any photograhpy classes and I am somewhat in experienced with cameras, so I was wondering if anyone had any advise for taking better pictures (besides getting a >$20 camera from WalMart :) ).

Thanks! :)

You might want to put "GUN porn" in the title instead of just "porn" next time. :neener:

You have the same problem I have, suck at taking pictures of guns. I suck at taking pictures of anything. Looks like your camera sucks. Mine too.

Gonna be keeping an eye on this thread.

howdy Glock19fan, glocks are a bugger to shoot because the finish is so light absorbant, here's mine next to my python. The python is nice and glossy, the glock, well, hardly glowing...

I don't know what kind of camera or what photo editing program you're using so these are best guesses...your pics seem to have a lot of noise, or grittiness and no real contrst. this could be a coupla things
1) your picture is underexposed and you're bringing up the brightness too much in your editing program which in turn is reducing the contrast- no deep blacks or white whites. shoot with much more light on your subject, try outdoors
2)you might also be too far away from your gun and so you're having to blow up and crop it too much, so you lose detail. Like Yote said, use your macro setting (looks like a picture of a flower in case you haven't read the manual) and get in as close as you can.
3)your composition- try to capure the gun from an unusual or different angle, don't get to busy with all the props.
4)lighting- move around the gun or move the light around the gun so that it reflects off the different surface planes.

Keep trying man, and give us some more info on what you're using and how you're using it...All my photos are taken on my kitchen counter using just the regular 60 watt overhead lights and an olympus digital camera using slow shutter speed and bracing against the side of my microwave...

TOMKATZ,

The good friendly folks at REI would have a heart attack followed by a sever case of indigestion if they saw your bottom picture.

All the more reason to post it frequently.

Glock19 - if those pic URL's are put into IMG tags they would display for you. I'll try and check it out.

I have changed your subject line BTW - we are trying to avoid the ''porn'' word ... it is not really relevant to gun stuff!! ;)

Re the pics .... if you can't get sharp close in - move back get a sharper pic - then crop out the bit you want - it should be still large enough for web use.

Second point - lighting ... needs more!!! Persevere tho - experiment. If you can get a camera with options for manual over ride of most settings, it'll help a lot.

Here's a fancy Commem' 1911 ... my one concession to collecting for its own sake!!

Clipse,
Love the 1911 A1. That's what I feel they should look like. Gorgeous weapon, but not "pretty". Like a beautiful woman who doesn't need makeup.

I'm no expert and as you know, there are others here that take much better photos, but I will add the following photo tips:

You want to eliminate as much glare and contrast as possible. If you have no special lights to use, take a table outside or near a window where you can get open shade, that is, even light from a shaded side of a building or the light from an overcast day. Now, if you do have artificial lights, you can position them around a white lampshade (I kid you not) and shoot through the top of the shade or a cutout. If you use incandescent lighting, then you want to experiment within your photo software to change the light balance/colors of your photo.

Without a macro mode, you want to get back within the range of your camera's focusing ability. As already posted, you can crop out the areas around your subject.

Use a tripod if your camera has one. It slows you down and that is good. It also allows you to reposition your subject for composition. Try it, you'll like it.

Some Digital Cameras are extremely sensative to movement (even the slightest), sometimes it takes several attempts for me to get a decent photo with mine. Also sensative to proper lighting.

I'm not very good at taking pic's but here are some of my best

The sad thing is that I think the best pic's I ever took of a firearm was of a friend's firearm.

My buddies Kimber Stainless II after I hand polished the frame and slide flats for him.
