An 'NIB' Pistol...

And....while lovely all round, the Cylinder and Barrel are 'In the White'.

Now, the images on which I had based the decision to purchase, had it appearing 'Blue'...and nothing in the seller's desription had said anything about it being in the White...

I wrote the seller, expressing disappointment...conflict about whether I even wish to keep it.

Might call him later today.

What would you do?

I don't think I like it...

I was expecting a "Blue" Barrel and Cylinder, Case Hardened Frame ( Frame is Case Hardened...)

It just looks really UN-finished...and I feel the seller should have described this.

I'll post some images in a little while...( can't right now...)

Subject to serial number confirmation, you may have one of the rare "Freak Model" Third Dragoons. They were made from spare parts remaining from the F series special edition Garibaldi Model production run. They bring a small premium over a regular F Series 3rd Model Dragoon, although they are worth considerably less than a fully finished Garibaldi Model. Only 94 "Freak Model" 3rd Dragoons were manufactured.

Perhaps someone can provide the Garibaldi Model serial numbers?

Hmmm....

Whatcha want for it? Not familiar with 'em, but it sparks my interest to ask. Is this a high-dollar "original" Colt, or like an Uberti re-pro that can be easily replaced with the one you like?

Well well!..I finally read someone else on here that think's 'in the white' look's like somebody was building a gun and quit before they got through...I agree, sir. A gun look's good blued plus it help's protect it from rust and corrosion. A gun is a tool, nothing more and nothing less, to me anyway. I'm not the least bit interested in rubbing some sort of automobile wax polish or some such thing on a gun to make it shine. My firearms are blued out. They stay clean, oiled and ready to go....ADD ON. To me people that do all that sort of stuff dosen't even really understand what a gun is and what it's for. They probably pick their piece up every 10 minutes just to fondle it and look at it. Probably like to put it on and wear it in the house and admire themselves in the mirror..I will now run for cover....

Hi mykeal,

Yes...it is one of the 'Freak Dragoons' and has a Garibaldi Serial No.

I knew this going into it, having asked some Serial No. and other questions here on THR prior to deciding.

I just had no idea it would be so much 'In the White'..!

I liked the plain no-scene Cylinder...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...

Brooding...

Hi ratdog68,

Made by 'Colt', yes...

3rd Model Dragoon...2nd Generation

Hi GoTC,

Lol...

Originally, I sought a nice, used, mellow, some what worn one, since I intended to Shoot and enjoy it, and not wanting to deprive posterity of a NIB one...and no waning to pay for an NIB one, either!

Well...could not find any to fit the bill...and, figured, WTH, why not go with a genuine Colt, if I found one 'reasonable'.

So...anyway...maybe those who know their subject, would have known the 'Freak' Dragoon would be a 'White' Barrel and Cylinder.

But, I did not know to expect this..!

If the whole thing was 'White', I'd probably say, "Oh, well...okay, keep it sorta Oiled down and let it be, shoot it, and so on..."

Just like I'd say if it were 'Blue'...

Just looks un-finished!! Like they forgot to finish it...!

Sort of threw me...

Aaahh! Go ahead and shoot it. Just kind of imagine what it might look like after a hard fur trapping season up North. Some of those guns come out of there looking pretty rough as far as the finish goes. You can always blue it, I'm sure you know all that stuff already....

Hi G of the C,

Yeah...

You're right of course...

And really, to go that route well...I would just make it my 'CCW' and let honest Carry, and one would hope, a weekly 50 Rounds pratice or so, do all the mellowing a boy could want...

That'd be a Hell of a scene...stopping into 7-11 at 2 A.M. for some Pall Malls and 1/2-and-1/2...me crouched momentarily by the Half-and-Half in the rear Coolers, I hear robbers appear and hear them start mayhem...and I cut loose...

I s'pose the smoke would clear by the time the Cops showed up...but'd be like a Tuly Fog for a while...

Lol...

Pics by supper time...gotta run errands now...

What is one supposed to rub these down with, anyway, rendered Bear Fat or something?

Hey! Whadaya doin' with my Gun there????

Lol...

Oh wait a minute...that's a 1st Model I think...( 1st Model, 1st Generation? )

Nice 'White' Cylinder though!

I hope that's a fair price for one of these..? OTD? or is shipping on top of that?

I'd hate to find out I payed too high...

Back soon...

"Hi ratdog68,

I unnerstan'... I'll be standin' by for the pix of that little beaut !! Quit fussin'... be happy with it, and use it !! LOL

Okay...

I finally got my day's first-round chores all done...and got to sit down, stand up, and look it over close...put it in my Belt and drew...point at a speck on-the-wall, holding arm's length aiming for a slow count of twenty with no wavers...and...

It's won me over...it has seduced me entirely...I did not stand a chance it turns out...

So, I'm happy...

Wow...this is one ( '1' ) NICE Pistol..!

I wrote the seller and told him the good news about me getting over my initial confusion stuff.

Here he is -

Well...I better get on to rounding up Caps, Powder, Ball, Mould, Bear Grease, and whatever else a boy needs, and get on with it!

My J-Frame is sure going to feel 'light' now...

Lol...

I meant to mention - it has tiny pegs or 'tits' between Nipple Stages, as though to suggest that the slender slit in the Hammer Nose could lock on one or any of these, and be Hammer 'down' when carrying charged...

Is this about right?

Is that how these were?

Is that the drill?

Interesting!

OMG !!!

That thing's hideous !!! You'd better send it to me post-haste !!! I'll sacrifice and relieve you of it. !!! :neener: That puppy is a treat to behold !!! Congrats on the acquisition !

Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhh :banghead:

Great looking pistol :p. Glad you like it :). Sad that you're gonna shoot it . It's a rare one that I don't have in my collection :(.

Have fun with it :):):).

If it's unfired and you have all the shipping boxes I would put it up and not shot it. It well go up in value. There are only 94 of those on the planet. I have some 2nd and 3rd model Colt Dragoons, 3rd gen if you would be interested in a trade of some sort.

Well darn it...now I DO feel vexed!

See, I was thinking I wanted a 'Shooter' and I could not find one..!

Well, I mean, I did not find one which seemed to Ring-the-Bell...I found this one, and I liked the 'plain' Cylinder.

And truely, I am not insensitive to how some Guns when entirely pristine 'NIB' and un-fired, maybe should stay that way...sure, especially if one has a choice.

"94 in all existance"..? Of the 'Freak Dragoons'?

Yipes...

Where's my Cotton Gloves????

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh...groan...

Okay, at least I sometimes know Wisdom when I hear it.

'Safe Prince' it is...

I'll round up more junk for the 'e-bay', work these fingers on the keyboard listing stuff and so on in stolen hours...re-start the Cigar Box of $$$ savings...and...find a God Blessed 'AMS', or 'Pietta' or 'Uberti', or as may be, or a for-sure "used, not abused" genuine Colt if it is not a proverbial Arm-and-a-Leg...and shoot "that".

That feels "right"...it would be the right respectful thing to do.

...sigh...

Life IS funny sometimes, in it's twists and turns of how things go!

Thanks everyone, for all through this fun adventure so far.

I really appreciate the education, and the commaraderie.

Now...the 'Freak Dragoons' -

These then, if I understand this correctly, were those Colt made, 2nd Generation Dragoons, which were slated for the Engraving attentions of the Garabaldi people, and, were thus prepared for them with Cylinders and Barrels left in the White, since, after the Engraving and Gold Work, those parts would be Blued.

And that for some reason, not all the Garabaldi slated Dragoons got Engraved and Gold Inlaid - these then, were merely left as-is, with 'White' Barrels and White Cylinders, and got packaged and sold that way, possibly with no special fan-fare about their uniqueness or peculiarity.

Is that about right?

So, also, out of curiousity, all things being equal condition wise, how do the 'Freak Dragoons' seem to compare value wise, to -

A ) Regular, Colt, 2nd Generation, 3rd Model Dragoons?

&

B ) Garibaldi Colt 2nd Generation Dragoons, which were Engraved and Gold-filled and so on?

Source: The Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Arms, Fifth Edition (2007) (Sixth Edition is now in print)

All values for 100% condition.

A) Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc. 2nd Generation 3rd Model Dragoon, 'C' Series: $725, 'F' Series: $675.

B) Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc. 2nd Generation 3rd Model Dragoon, ('F' Series Special Edition) Giuseppe Garabaldi Model Limited Edition, with presentation case: $1000

C) Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc. 2nd Generation 3rd Model 'Freak' Dragoon (unfinished Garabaldi model, no presentation case): $700.

The Blue Book is only a guide. Actual prices can and do vary considerably in either direction.

Now this is purely speculation on my part but is it possible that your Dragoon was left in the white because the original seller/buyer/wanted to have it engraved? Or possibly Colt intended to engrave all the freak Dragoons? Just spekulatin'.....Oh p.s. Super nice Dragoon! :)

Thanks mykeal...

This has been so interesting...and fun, learning about these.

Lots more to learn, and a good beginning underway.

Having one now, even though I have not shot one yet, I can really see and feel their appeal.

I am decided not to Shoot the one I just got, and to keep it as it is...but I am looking for one which is a 'Shooter', and whether Uberti or Colt shall prevail, we shall see.

Funny...the phrase 'Freak Dragoon' has grown on me, too.

What fun...
