I have four daughters, yes I said FOUR(4), and no sons, all girls (Yes, I know, I'm DOOMED!). My oldest is 16(gasp! that makes me feel old) and she has no real interest in shooting right now. She used to like to when she was younger, but now she's in a phase where it's too "embarrassing" to be seen doing anything with "old" dad. I can only hope she will come around someday. Afterall, I'm not going to force her to come shooting if she doesn't want to, that would just ruin it. My second daughter, age 11, is very interested in shooting now. She asks to go shooting with me all the time. We go as often as we can. She uses the same rifle her older sister did since even if my oldest was still into shooting, she has outgrown that old rifle. It fits my 11 year old just fine for now. My third daughter, age 5, is just starting to show an interest, partly because she looks up to her big sister and she likes to emulate everything she does. She is currently getting safety talks, and I've let her pull the trigger a few times on a close(5-10yards) reactive(pop can, plastic bottle, baloon) target. She can hit targets like that at close range, so it helps to encourage her rather than discourage her with a miss at longer range. My youngest is still too young, she'll be 2 yo in a couple weeks, but I'm hoping she'll like to shoot as well when she gets older.
None of my girls have asked for a pink gun, yet. The rifle they are using, which was originally purchased for my oldest daughter, is an old Remington single shot bolt action .22 that was pretty beat up. I got it at a gun show for $60, it was priced at $75, but I talked him down because of its condition. It had lots of surface rust, the stock was badly dinged up with no finish left on it, but nothing was broken or missing, and the bore looked ok still. The bore actually cleaned up nice and shiny, and when I test fired it, it shot quite well too. I cut and recrowned the barrel to 18" and cut the stock down to fit. Then I reblued the metal and refinished the stock myself. My daughter never complained about it, she never even asked if she could get it in any other color. Maybe they just don't know that's a possibility.
However, If any of my girls asked for a pink, purple, or whatever color gun, you can bet I will do my best to get it for them. I may even ask them if they have a color preferance for their gun. They have to share a gun for now, I can't even afford to buy myself any guns right now, much less for four other people. Do ya think I'm made of money or something?!!
