I've been collecting knives since childhood. Pocket, boot, dive, tanto, bowie, Swiss Army, throwing, and Rambo... I've got 'em all. As a boy, Smokey Mountain Knife Works and US Cavalry catalogs encouraged me to save my pennies. After the obligatory Swiss Army pocketknife, the first "real" addition to the collection was a Command I by Gerber. It was the quintessential boot knife, and if I recall correctly, cost me over $60-- an exorbitant amount for a sixth-grader to spend on anything, let alone a knife!

Since then, my memories of Gerber knives has been fond. "Legendary Blades" has always been their tag-line. In recent years, like many others, I've swayed to trendier nameplates: Benchmade, SOG, Microtech, Piranha, Boker, and Colt among others. But, I've finally come full circle and returned to familiar territory. Let me introduce you to my new Gerber: the model 06 Automatic.

I say without hyperbole that this is my favorite knife... EVER. For many months, I've been searching for a knife featuring the elusive S30V steel blade. The Gerber 06 Automatic is that blade. To be honest, I didn't find it on my own. One of my buddies with a Ranger tab came into the shop last week to return a rifle I loaned him (months ago) and showed me his 06 Auto. Immediately, I was impressed with its feature-rich design. The "skull crusher" lanyard loop is menacing. The safety selector is reminiscent of a style you would find on a pistol. The aluminum handle is ergonomic, rugged, and solid. The pocket clip is the perfect size-- securing the knife in place, yet displaying just the right amount of handle for watchful eyes to see. The drop point blade is an elegant, classic design-- and partially-serrated. It's also available in a Tanto-style. The finish is stealth-like: operator black.

Perhaps it's the October chill in the air, the strange mix of euphoria and depression that aging another year brings, the 24% year-to-date loss my 401k has taken, the end of triathlon season, the Rays race for the World Series, or the return of college football. For some reason, this Gerber brings me back to a simple time in my life. It reminds me of that day long ago, when a package from Smokey Mountain Knife Works arrived at my mom's house with a shiny new Gerber Command I inside. Just in time for my birthday, not unlike this new knife.

Have a good one and God bless.

My god, I thought I was the only one who owned one of these knives.

They are nice, though two of the three pocket-clip retaining screws have gone missing. I should talk to the customer service of Gerber, see if they can't ship some out to me.

But yeah, it's a great knife isn't it? Strong, sturdy (may not be fastest) but I certainly trust the locking mechanism.

Missing screws? Screws loose? Taking the wind outta my sales here, friend! I better get my red Locktite out! :)

My folding favorite, (and in Oregon it is legal to buy and carry autos) is the manually opening full sized Benchmade 610 RUKUS.

Favorite fixed blade is my RC-6:

i also love Gerber blades, i carry an "1970 MKII" i do have a Command II, similer to your Command I, yet longer.

OnPointFirearms

I remember my first two Gerber knives; a FS-II folder and a Mark I boot knife. I still have both of them, though for now they are "semi-retired" (just because I can't readily replace vintage '70's knives). I think the FS-II folder cost me $25.00 and the Mark I was a bit more at $37.50. I remember reading about them in "Soldier of Fortune" magazine. Back then, David Steele and Jerry Ahern both wrote for the magazine, and mentioned the knives in their columns. Thanks for reviving some good memories from nearly 30 years ago.

That'd be a really good idea. That's what I'm doing as soon as my new screws arrive.

[EDIT] I just emailed customer service, and within 30 minutes my email was returned, essentially saying:

"Yeah, what's your address - we'll ship you the parts, no problem."

God I love it when companies stand behind products.

Legal for carry in TX?

So that Gerber looks like a cool knife. I thought this would be a great carry knife. I carry a pocket knife everywhere I go as a tool.

However, when I looked it up online, the Federal government restricts the transport of the Automatic opening blades from state to state unless you're a LEO, Military or some sort of procurement for a government agency.

However, I can purchase this knife from retailers here in the great state of Texas as long as I have ID. That seems simple enough, but when I started to read whether it would be legal to carry this tool at the college where I teach, they restricted "illegal" knives from being carried as per Penal Code 46.05(a):

Sec. 46.05. Prohibited Weapons.
(a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures, transports, repairs, or sells:
(1) an explosive weapon;
(2) a machine gun;
(3) a short-barrel firearm;
(4) a firearm silencer;
(5) a switchblade knife;
(6) knuckles;
(7) armor-piercing ammunition;
(8) a chemical dispensing device; or
(9) a zip gun.

My question: does this count as a switchblade?

According to the definition within the code:

(11) "Switchblade knife" means any knife that has a
blade that folds, closes, or retracts into the handle or sheath, and
that:
(A) opens automatically by pressure applied to a button or other device located on the handle; or
(B) opens or releases a blade from the handle or
sheath by the force of gravity or by the application of centrifugal force.

If so, there seems to be a disconnect between being able to purchase it, but not being able to carry it or even possess it. I'm not going to take it to work because I don't want to risk my employment--being a college prof is the perfect job for me. However, I'm wondering if I could legally own one. I don't like laws that restrict my freedom to own useful tools, but I don't want to break the law.

BTW, this is my first ever post to THR. I like the rules of engagement here.

Welcome to THR, ChemicalArts.

Yes, it is a switchblade. No, TX doesn't allow you to own one legally.

In short, switchblade laws are a hodgepodge. Each state has their own switchblade laws with only a passing resemblance to any other state's. Some allow them to be carried, some not allowing carry without a permit, some not allowing carry at all and some, like TX and NY, not even allowing possession. Then there's the fed interstate commerce law restricting sale to anyone that isn't military or LEO. A real crazy puzzle.

Yup, it is a switchblade. Check your local laws.

Gerber will not sell one to you directly unless you can provide department letterhead or order through NSN. I get to skirt that a little bit by being an active Emergency Medical Technician.

Also, mine was a gift. Thanks, obligatory awesome girlfriend :D

For what its worth, I have a few "auto", Switchblades, etc.
I take out the spring, tighten the allen screw, and presto it is a folder.
You release it by pushing the button, but have to open it like a folder

If its a switchblade, most states dont allow those for carry. So you could be in some trouble if you had to use it for self defense and the court found that it was a switchblade. Ive even heard about them giving ppl a hard time over assisted blades that can be opened almost with the flick of the wrist. It also has the serated teeth, which makes it look meaner.

Nice knife, looks really solid, which is pretty much my main fear about automatic knives.

I also have a most favorite knife ever, unfortunately, it changes every 3 months or so...

OnPoint,
I like that Gerber.......a LOT!!!
:)
I also carry an S30V auto, and it too is my favorite.
Great point about the location of the clip and the amount of exposed knife.
My Al Mar came with a concealment clip. The knife was carried flush with the pocket top. Hard to grab. So I fixed it.
So far, I'm real pleased with the S30V. Holds an edge well and is friendly to resharpen. I took a decent sized chip out of my blade prying a bad round out of an SMG, so I gained real insight into the reharpening characteristics of S30V.
I think any steel would have chipped in that situation. My account is not to be taken as being critical of S30V.

I had a Harsey Air Ranger that the screws would always come out of.

I haven't tried this particular knife, but I have just about given up on Gerber altogether. They used to be one of my favorite brands, as far as the quality you get for the price.

Gerber 06

Pulled one of these off a 15 year old driving a stolen car. Nice huh?

I was surprised at the build of the knife. After my last two auto knives... a Boker 707
000_9418.jpg

and then later a Benchmade CQC7 Auto (no pic)... I lost interest in Automatics. For the most part it seems like autos are just regular knives that the companies modify to be switchblades. As far as Gerber goes... well... I have to be honest... Outside of the Gerber Tool... most serious weapons guys have moved away from Gerber due to the drop in quality over the years. I was pretty impressed with the 06 Auto and will be retiring my Benchmade CQC7 (Non-auto) so that I can try out an 06. For the most part my "tactical" blades get little use. I have a utility blade for general use... but I have been carrying my CQC7 for about 12 years now... so to set it aside and put something new in my pocket is a big thing.

All in all if you are interested in Automatics... this looks like a pretty solid knife.

I'm going to second the BM 610 Rukus, that is one of my favorite folders. I guess my favorite knife would probably be my little Swiss Army BSA knife that I got while in Cub Scouts, like OnPointFirearms's Gerber it has some good sentimental value.

I have more than a few tactical style knives but find myself carrying more traditional styles these days so I'll post up a few from the other side of the coin...

My favorite folder, made by Kerry Hampton in the Tony Bose shop:
