Yesterday I traded a local guy my SKS for a Kahr CW9. I already have an AK, the SKS was sitting unused. Straight across trade, I didn't spend a single dime on this one.

Anyways, upon first inspection, the gun seems VERY light, about one pound would be my guess.

The sights are easy to acquire, and the gun handles and feels like a regular full-size despite being 2/3 the size.

I fired 150 rounds of FMJ and 75 rounds of various hollowpoints (including my pet defense load, Federal Hydra-Shok), and it ate everything like candy. The previous owner fired approx. 400 rounds through it, so break-in period is over. This is my second auto-loading pistol, first one being a 4" Springfield XD-9. I like how the CW9 feels in my hand, very compact but not too small to be uncomfortable for practice. Recoil feels the same as my full-size 9mm XD.

The trigger is very long, as such I never know when the trigger will break and fire the gun, making those precision shots more challenging. On the other hand, it is very smooth and much lighter than I expected, so overall I have no complaints about the trigger. It isn't a target/competition pistol after all.

My only gripes are as follows: The front and back strap checkering is a bit too aggressive for me, tenderizing the inside of my fingers after extended firing; and the pistol really doesn't like to chamber a round by hand-cycling (which causes the round being fed to nose-dive in the mag), only by locking the slide back and then hitting the slide release will it chamber reliably. In operation the latter isn't a concern, and the aggressive checkering is only a comfort issue and does not affect reliability.

Overall, I am 100% happy with this trade.

Here are the pics (the target shown was shot at 10 yards):

OK

yes a super nice gun and the kahr manual stares to use the slide lock release to load the first round ALWAYS. Now one can rack the slide once he gets use dto doing it. Not alot of gun to hold on to either but it is rackable but if you ride the slide back any at al lit will ftf on you . Try cupping your hand totally over the top of the slide and then rack it back. This willwrok better than the two finger mthod, as againa the kahrs are tight as hell andtheir recoils springs are very stout indeed.

the trigger on your kahr is 3/8" pull as it is on all kahrs. It is totally smooth as you stated and it take some getting used to.

You can go to wolffs gunsprings and order thier 5# striker spring that drops right in your cw kahr and it will change the trigger poundage from about 7.5# down to 5# but not the travel length, This really makes a nice shooting gun but again not a hair trigger gun due to the loooong trigger pull, which is by design. It is about as true a double action to a revoler as u can get. If u can shoot a revoler accurately, u can master the kahrs. Great guns IMO and u got a real dandy in that CW9 . Kahrs are not ammo sensitive either, so what ever goes into the pipe willusually go "bang".

The make some after market slip on rubber sleeves that will help that grip alot..

You made a nice trade IMO..

I have a PM9, K9 and P380 and they all go bang and have never given any issues.

I think you came out a little ahead... I have a CW9 and the PM9 and love both of them... The CW has some more rounds down the pipe and I can rack the slide with no issues. On the CW9, its still not 100% but its getting there. Just needs to be shot more... I am also about to try the spring swap that jocko recommended so I'll have an update on that in a few weeks.

As for the checkering, I took a bit of sandpaper to mine... Probably ruined any resale value but its a lot more comfortable. Also, you can pick up one of these...

All in all, its a good pistol especially if you have a CHL will CC.

Good luck and enjoy!

V.

Thanks guys. The other guy seemed very happy with the SKS as it was pristine, all-matching, and unmolested, never ventured close to a Tapco product. Whatever, we were both happy with the trade so it was a fair deal, however, I feel I may have gotten the better end of it. I like this pistol a lot! :)

BTW, anyone know where I can find the Kahr manual. perhaps in PDF form? Thanks.

i've found that the surprise break actually helps in making precision shots... YMMV :)

i like my CW9 quite a bit too, the only thing that surprised me was how long the reset was

I just traded for a CW9, it should be here in a few days. Thanks for the pics, the comparison really helps as I cant find one anywhere to fonddle.

nice trade, and thanks for the review and range report. the CW9 is next on my list, just waiting for the gun show to come back to town so i can get it.
