My mosin project

My grandfather's deer rifle was/is a sporterized Springfield 1899 Carbine in a pretty Monte Carlo style stock. Although it does have the original iron sights.
I've recently been debating rechambering my Type 44 Arisaka in 6.5 Grendel to have access to cheaper ammo and more variety in loads vs. the pricey 6.5 Arisaka ammo. Many folks here didn't like the idea of me destroying history like that, but oddly, none of them were willing to make a decent offer on a rifle that was no longer in original condition.
Sacred cows and such.

Personally I would drive it in the ground and hang a bird feeder off of it- but that's just me.
- that sounded aweful- sorry - I just have never been a fan of mosins- and the ones I have had ...have been crap.

WHAT...o_O... You need to slow down and smell the MOSIN :what:a nice Sportsterized one and reload your own ammo will have you hugging it before long:eek:

The trigger on my 91/30 is about 5 lbs. 5 oz. on a Lyman digital gauge. I would have guessed that it's less than that, and it's got a nice clean break; and I've never done anything to it. Not bad at all for an old mil-surp bolt gun. Most of those I've handled felt about the same.

What, if anything, did you do with the trigger. (The ones I've handled had a pull weight between 12 ounces and 600 pounds. More creep than a slimy politician.)
Nothing. There’s a bit of slop but I’m the only weirdo in the universe apparently, who likes a heavier trigger on a rifle. I like knowing it’s a trigger I’m pulling and I like having a decent amount of take up to pull the trigger nice and slow.

I've had several crap ones and right now have one that is a fantastic shooter by my standards. 5" groups at 250yds with those crude sights isn't all that shabby. My other one is a chinese m53 that has a crap barrel but the action is smooth and the trigger is decent, probably from use. I plan on re-barreling it to 7mmx54R and loading 140s for deer and such.
Ya I know I could just buy something in 7mm-08 but I like a good project as much as @LoonWulf.

Be safe, happy shooting and keep it in the 10 ring!

Way to go. Keep up the work. Glad to see there is more then one person here ok with modin mosins. I’ve got three in the works and none close to complete. Lol. I’m got a killer deal on a Boyd’s stock a while back. Walnut. It’s not bad really. My only gripe is the gap between the grip and the trigger is maybe 1/4-1/3 inch to much. But paid peanuts for it and plan on it being my patten stock making full custom stocks from. I have three barrels on order for my builds. 2 in 7.62x54r the other in 9.5x54r, working with the smith on the chamber still. We think we can do it. Waiting to hear from and dye makers to see if the will make the reloading dyes.

the other barrels will be open sights guns.
Working on turning down the rear pull and turn safety into a nub that will blend flush with the back on the bolt. Having to re-thread the firing pin but that is easy.

one action waiting on a barrel.

I LIKE. I didn’t even know you could take the barrels off these things.

I like your bolt a lot better than mine, time to start saving up for one lol

the guy who did my bolt is out of the bizz it seems. But there are others. As for the barrel. It’s a nightmare and a half to remove. I’ve never done it with success. Kill my last action. Now I let the pros do that. But even they charge me for the amount of hate it generates for them. It’s not easy from what I hear. I have timney triggers on mine. They are an amazing upgrade. You can buy trigger return springs, shims and do you own trigger job and get good results. But the time Timney is just awesome.

Now there's a project I'd like to see completed! I've got a buddy with a shot out mosin. I've been trying to get him to let me spin on another barrel.....

Cut a relief groove in front of the receiver, and heat the whole thing with a heat gun then spray pb blaster, or other penetrant, into the barrel threads from the breach and any available holes.
2' pipe wrench and a 3lb mini sledge has had every barrel off (even one my Smith gave up on) in a jiffy. NEVER get to reuse a barrel tho.......
Or pick and choose from the above.

I bet there is someone out there who makes an aftermarket modern one too.
yeah that one I'd have to get off all gentle like, as he wants to be able to put it back on.
We were considering wasting an stupid amount of money and going with an full bull barrel, cantilever scope mount, aftermarket bolt body, timney trigger and Richards or Boyd's heavy stock (or I was, I haven't told my buddy about it yet).
Probably smarter to just install a Sporter barrel and drop it in a Sporter stock tho.

Lol that would be quite a project! I’d love to see a modern rifle available in the US made for the 54r.

I like! I’ve seen pictures where people make wood stocks and then cut out the comb and make the height of the comb adjustable using some kind of screw/spacer system. That would be a cool ass project.

yeah, I've seen a few done really well....That's beyond my patience level tho lol.

I really like that scout scope setup. I assume it's "no gunsmithing" and that the rifle can be returned to original ? Had a scout scope in a no 'smithing mount on a K-98 for about 11 years and enjoyed it a lot. It was from S&K Scope Mounts ( www.scopemounts.com ) and they also have them for various Mosins. Got some soft point 7.62x54R handloads that shoot pretty well from my 91/30 and I've been thinking about how much better they might do if I could see my target better. The Leupold scout scope is currently sitting in a drawer doing nothing. It would be great to use it on the Mosin as long as it could one day be put back to original configuration like the K98 was. So who else offers a no gunsmithing mount for a scout scope on a Mosin ? The S&K mount on my K98 was nice but I'd like to know what other options are available.

I THINK both @Paul R Zartman and I are using the thin rail under the 91/30 rear sight assembly. It takes some work to get the sleeve off the barrel (unless you cut it, which would obviously require a new one to return to original). the rail tappers with the barrel so easiest thing to use are millet adjustable .22 rings, or other dual directional clamping mount/rings.
On that one I used a full length clamping airgun mount with shims to get it straightish with the bore, and raise the front of the mount a little.

Think they look great, good shooting to, I wanted to do one in 45/70 one day but never found a action to do I it.
Some one on here has a nice .45-70 single shot, can't remember who tho.
It would for sure be a neat option, and you could probably get the mag working.

Oh on the scout scope front, I'd forgotten s&k offer a very good scout mount that attaches to the rear sight.
