OK, I've finally decided that I need help with this disease. Many normal folks have a totally rational fear of running out of ammo....don't they? Or am I starting out with a totally delusional idea from the get go???

When I was a small child, I saw all the war movies and it was ingrained deeply that you should NEVER run out of ammo. As I grew and matured (point of dispute amongst my relatives and friends to be argued later) I was forbidden to have weapons by my Christian Parents and always told to "turn the other cheek" when bad people turned up. They placated my thirst (for a time) with non-threatening capguns and model airplanes.

As soon as I could (after High School) I went into the Marine Corps and found weapons....Oh Sweet MOTHER I found weapons! But, it was not all Happiness in the Suck. Being 1975 and Post-Vietnam...we had them but didn't get to shoot them because the budget wouldn't allow it.

So, my Military time only whet my appetite...not satisfy it. And....I discovered Handloading! Oh....that was GOOD!!! I could build MY OWN AMMO!! And, so, it began.

I only had a handfull of firearms and figured I needed a few hundred rounds for each. Then it went to 1K for each. Then I rationalised the need for 5-10K for the Most Needed rifles. The disease spread and the house groaned from the accumulated weight.

Fast forward to today. I just ordered 2 cans of 7.62x25 for my CZ-52. Added to the 3K+ (one of the symptoms of EAD {I'm going to name this Excessive Ammo Disorder} is not being able to cound your rounds. Do YOU know how many you have??? If not, YOU may have EAD!)

Seriously folks, how many people have over 5 thousand rounds for a pistol they rarely shoot? Didn't matter, the ammo was cheap (and I mean REALLY CHEAP...under $.11 delivered) so I just HAD to have it.....

OK. Enough soul baring for now. The recent and dramatic price increases on ammo has partially cured me of EAD but that is only because I have a lot of Scottish blood and refuse to pay extortionist prices for my fix.

So, my friends....I confess before you that I am imperfect and need help with my addiction.

I thought I could control it.....10K will be fine. Then it was 20K will be fine. Then....I saw that damn Dawn of the Dead with the Athletic Zombies and I went wild!!!.....I cannot begin to count the cans that clog my world now. I really need help....

Always looking for a Silver Lining to such a debilitating phobia, I have been designated as THE place to go if the Zombies attack by my associates.

So, my friends, I throw myself naked before you and ask for any help that a friend could give a friend with such a condition.

Thanks. Rob

The current price of ammo is NOT a cure for this disease. You need to get into reloading--that's what I did:D

So, my friends, I throw myself naked before you and ask for any help that a friend could give a friend with such a condition.

First - put some cloths on or nobody is going to help you !! :neener:

Second - Plan on shooting more - much more !

Third - Oh hell ! I think I got EAD - where the heck is the next 12 step meeting ?

I have found that it depends on the gun. For semiauto rifles I usually want much more around than I really have any rational need for.
For something like a Winchester or Marlin though I would be OK with a few hundred rounds.
I have set a 50 cal ammo can as my desired amount for every caliber. It gives me a realistic goal that I can afford to reach, that is not too hard to move when I relocate, and that should be enough to get me through any conceivable situation that I would survive.
And on top of that ammo can I also usually have a few loose boxes for range use. The ammo can is "sealed" and not to be touched unless I would be in dire need.

Unless your hoarding habits are seriously affecting your finances (say, for instance, you're spending food money or gas money in ammo), I say go for it. Fill a bathtub with bullets, get in it, and post a picture!!

And hey, at least you're not hoarding cats or rubbish or newspapers... it's ammo, it will always get more expensive and it can last for years! What you're doing looks like good investing to me, and I plan to follow your steps, oh master :bows:

The current buzz about upcoming price increases has only fueled my obsession. I just exceeded 6K of favorite pistol round and 5K of my favorite shotgun rounds. My estimate would be a total of about 800 lbs when I throw in the rest of my stash.

Are we doing on-line meetings or do we need to find local meeting places?

The Twelve Steps to Recovery
1. We admitted we were powerless to control our ammo purchases--that our ammo had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a shooter greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our credit cards over to the care of The Armourer, as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless ammo inventory.
5. Admitted to The Armourer, to ourselves, and to another shooter the exact magnitude of our cache.
6. Were entirely ready to have The Armourer remove our excessive cache from around from us.
7. We have humbly asked Him to remove our ammo.
8. Made a list of all shelves, floors, and closets we had harmed, and became willing to make them available for other things.
9. Cleared and made direct repairs to such storage spaces wherever possible, except when to do so would leave us totally defenseless.
10. Continued to take an ammo inventory and promptly admit when exceeding our limits.
11. Sought through practice and meditation to improve our conscious contact with The Armourer, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to resist excessive ammo purchases.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our calibers.

Now send all your ammo to me and I will see the The Armourer gets it. Just PM me for the address.

Wait until you start reloading, it's amazing how excited a grown man can get over a piece of brass. The brand new, really shiny pieces can near cause me to swoon.

I'm an "ammoholic".:D Since I started reloading last year, my stash has grown to 10,000 + rounds.:D:eek: This stash includes 40 S&W, 357 mag, 7.62x39, 22 LR, 22 magnum, 30 carbine, and 12 gauge. Reloading is a very fun and addictive hobby, I find myself having a constant desire load ammo, but now I am finally having to constrain myself, due to the money I have already spent. I shoot on a regular basis, 50-100 rounds/week, even at this rate, it will take quite awhile before I deplete my "stash".:D

I know the feeling.. the only reason I have been shooting recently is to get me some empty brass so I can reload. and if I don't have time to shoot I just order once fired brass by the bushel .
i think I have 2 lifetime supplies of 762x54r

I say you can not have too much ammo, or too many guns.

NO one ever died from having too much ammo or an extra gun in a gun fight.

Seriously as long as you can really afford it why not, MY wife an I have a deal, I can not have more guns then she has shoes, so I know I am covered, it is a great deal if you can get it.

Start with the comment not to harsh about how many shoes she has. She will reply "I do not have too many shoes" you go from there.

Will it ease your mind if I tell you I ordered 21,000 primers last night and have at least 35,000 projectiles ready and waiting to be loaded. I will not even go into what is already loaded and factory ammo, since quite frankly I do not even know what I have as far as #s go.

I understand. Believe me, I do.

I can be a member...

I actually had someone give me a ton of 10mm ammo.... I went out and bought a gun to shoot it.

Is that the first time? Nope. Got some 5.7x28 ammo cheap..... Got the carbine.

It is a sickness, I admit it.

Rough estimate....40k rnds of various ammo on hand.... and I need more.

I only have about 50 rounds of .40 S&W jacketed hollow point for self defense. 100 rounds of .22 rimfire for the bolt action. I feel so inferior time to order 1,200 rounds of factory reloads from Cabelas!

Answer...Take up Knitting!

If you stack ammo cans carefully, you can construct furniture...Chairs-couches-tables-beds. Just stack them close together and perhaps bungee cord or strap them in place...Then with your new found knitting skills, knit yourself a cover...You might want to put a little fiber fill in there cause those handles can leave a crease on your butt!

Use the money you save on furniture to buy MORE AMMO!!!!:D

(german accent)

there there Rob, vu must vunderstand, your concerns are ov no consequence. why, it has been well understood for a long time now that one can never have "too much" ammo, in fact, I would ve concerned iv you diznt have dis desire for more ammo.

now, here iv the web link of a group, vou will find all the help vou need there.

Great idea!

Fill a bathtub with bullets, get in it, and post a picture!!

If I could figure out how to do that without fubaring the finish on my tub, I'd go for it.

I too am an ammoholic. It was bad in the early 90s when it seemed they might ban hollow points. Cha-ching! The UPS truck was coming two or three times a week with heavy packages. Then things calmed down for a while. Then I discovered EBRs, specifically HK91 series back a decade ago. Then there was the Dawn of the Dead remake. I then discovered ARs just a couple of years ago. Oh, the days of going through my Southern Ammunition 1000 round boxes of .223 and sorting the headstamps into ammo cans for proper storage. Zombie ammo, ya know.

Ah, the days of XM193 at $200, then $250 a case delivered. Good Zombie / TEOTWAWKI ammo, of course!

Ah, the days of buying 1000 cases of 9mm +P+ for $100-120 a piece. Last ditch Zombie ammo.

And those wooden cases of Argentinian 7.62x51. I still look at those, part of my spare bedroom decor with glee. Even better I got them for $120 or so back in the mid-90s when the local police chief estimated their were 3000 gang bangers in our town. (So I ordered 5000 (more) rounds.)

Now, with ammo prices so high and climbing, I'm reluctant to shoot the stuff. The days of blasting away are over. Every shot counts and serves a purpose.

I've got probably 80 .50 caliber ammo cans, two dozen .30cals, and a dozen misc. larger ones brimming full with ammo. I've got a gun safe stuffed with ammo. I've got wooden crates of ammo.

This includes ammo I've got stored at probably a half-dozen places from my mom's house to emergency rally points.

Heck, I've got more ammo rolling around in my trunk that most people have in their homes.

It's so bad that when I read about police departments complaining about their stocks being low for their entire department for training and duty, I think "lightweights!"

My UPS man was so tired of those heavy packages to my office that he moved onto an easier route. (He's a friend of mine and GSL member).

I am getting better though. I haven't bought any ammo for a few months now.

John

The cure is simple. Swear off buying anymore, and send me what you *do* have. I will dispose of it for you.
Hey, what're friends for?

Man, I thought I was bad, but I realize now that I truly am a lightweight.

Anyhow, I'm pretty much cured. Some of you would say I never had it in the first place, perhaps just a sniffle. I got married and had kids.

For me it was simple, I ask myself:
"Diapers or ammo?" "Mortgage or ammo?" "Food or ammo?"
I realized that I really don't need that much ammo, don't shoot that much anymore, anyhow. Wouldn't go back for all the ammo in the world, either.

I did talk my wife into a second M1 Garand from the CMP a while back though. I told her that they would not be available by the time our son is old enough, and he of course needs an M1 of his own. He's a year and a half old.
