My New Grips

I finished this pair yesterday. This is Amboyna Burl. I love working with this particular wood, except that it is so expensive it certainly gave me a case of the 'nerves' before I did any cutting or shaping!

Amboyna Burl was used in the past as a dash treatment for Rolls Royce and now because of it's rarity you just don't see much of this around at all.

What do yo think?

I have just started with Amboyna Burl and really LOVE the figuring and color of this wood.

The last set I finished was Bolivian Rosewood.

I don't use a CNC. Everything is done the old fashioned way...by hand. That has it pluses and minuses...my failure rate on new styles is high, but the fit and finish is custom.

Hi Jmurman,
I too make 1911 grips and do not use a CNC, I do everything by hand. I also do a lot of custom inlay work, medallions, MOP, deer antler and carving, along with checkering and stippling.
The reason for this post is that if I can ever be of any help to you in telling you how I have rigged up to do this the old fashioned way, please don't hesitate to contact me.
I have not been on the forum in several months. I will post some of my work later.

Thanks for wanting to see. This set is Cocobolo with a copied Kimber SIS design with colt medallions. They will go on a Colt Commander 80 series.

How do you do your stippling?

Most of my stippling is done with a hammer and 16d nail wrapped with electrical tape just above the point with many layers to give it a good grip, then I use an engravers hammer. I have tried some with a dremel but didn't like the effect. I suppose it could be perfected, but the nail is as fast as the dremel would be and the accidents are much less with the nail.

I was expecting more post from you. I am very interested in the work you are posting. I would like to compare my procedure with yours, maybe I could pick up some tricks of the trade from you. Anything I could learn would be great, and I don't mind sharing information.

I have just finished a project for a rebuild of a Ruger 10/22. I am finishing up the tutorial to be posted on my blog site...the write up is more complicated than DOING the 10/22

I have a set of grips being sent to me to duplicate. I am going to make a set of grips from Gabon Ebony and possibly a burl inset.

Now I see why you have not been posting, I know it takes a lot of time to put something like that together. I would like to add also that the article is great, and goes into detail of how it is done. I built a lot of custom stocks back in the 70's when I had a gun shop in Tennessee. I was known for my accuracy and free floating the barrels. Couldn't make a living at it so had to move on to other things. But it was something that I really enjoyed doing.

You spoke of the Garbon Ebony, I just finished 2 sets of grips in Garbon, one in Macassar Ebony, and one in African Black Wood which looks almost the same as the Ebony. They turned out very well.

I think my next project will be Ivory, if I sell enough at next week ends show to afford the blank Ivory. I will keep Ya'll up to date if I do the Ivory.

Hi Carl,

I haven't done much in the past week or so in the shop. I spent the day yesterday at the range, which was something i haven't done in quite a while.

Tough to be working on guns and not be able to take the time to go shooting!

I should be back into the Gabon Ebony/whatever insert in the next week or so.

Hey thanks for the kind words.

I have bneen involved with another rifle project and have put the grips off to the side for the time being. I am about 90% finished with my M1 Garand accurizing project. I have also re-worked my remaining Korean KA milsurp ammo to remove the corrosive primers.

Anyway I'll have the Garand put back together this week and all of my ammo completed at the same time.

If you're interested I've done a tutorial on the Garand like I did on the Ruger 10/22 and will have that posted on my site in the near future.

Setting here not much to do and was looking at the forum. I noticed where I had posted that I was starting to work with Ivory and would post it if I did.

Well I have worked a few sets of the Ivory since my last post and would now like to show you how they came out.

Hats off to you guys. I am trying to make a pair for my L213 and I am finding I do not have the right tools, skills or patience. The way these grips attach to the pistil frame is such a pain in the butt.
