I once had a 3" 317, but traded it at a gun show for a significant loss. It went back to S&W twice and still sucked.
First, it spit powder in my face about every other round, at least. S&W "recut the forcing cone". Fixed.
Second, I never could get it to shoot low enough (or high enough, I can't remember). Sent it to them and they said no problem. O.K., I'm a competitive shooter and know guns and trigger pull, but whatever.
It was inaccurate as hell. And then I finally noticed that there was a ding in the crown of the barrel underneath the factory finish (paint) - that was likely the cause of the inaccuracy.
At that point I'd had enough of dealing with S&W and their obvious lack of QA and got rid of the thing.
