mythbusters episode last night ... shooting locks ... and full-auto through the floor

I think it's rather unfortunate that they concluded locks "CAN'T" be opened with a handgun simply because the 158 grain .357 couldn't do it. I would like to have seen what a .45 or .44 magnum would do....

Just look at the box of truth link posted above.

I would have liked them to also perform tests with concrete/steel backing the lock, or shoot higher, or shoot at the ring.

That's why I hate to see people citing that show as proof/disproof of [insert idea here]. Of course, the same people probably think they're learning wilderness survival from Bear Grylls.

Gee! You think they have a Government level budget?

Be glad they can afford what they do.

Geoff
Who notes even Government Budgets are limited.

I work in the television business and you'd be alarmed at how large a shows budget is.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were spending $400,000 per episode on Mythbusters, if not more.

locks

hit the lock on top between the hasps with a heavy hammer and they WILL open.there are shims that are used also down the hasp on the locking block.
grad of Belsaw school.:uhoh::confused::)

I like myth busters

because it is entertaining. If you ever do have to remove a lock and you don't have a set of bolt cutters lying about, don't pick up a hammer. Pick up a drill, cordless if you have one, and find a bit that is the same size or slightly smaller around than the hole where you insert the key is. Drill straight up through the center and give it a tug. The locking mechanisms are made of brass and drill easily. Yes, it works on master locks. I have the lost the keys to a few padlocks over the years.:banghead:

Just to add to the mix; Master padlocks are the kindergarten of lock-picking school. Much quieter.

As for the locks, I've found rocks or bricks much quieter and more effective than any gun. A hammer works, too, and you save the ammo for better targets.

Hey this reminds me... I found a Masterlock combination lock in a box of stuff. I have no clue how long I have had it, but I do know I have looooooong forgetten the combination. Does anyone know how I can go about retrieving it?

wow, complicated approaches to locks that require a tire iron and a wee bit of leverage to open. picks? bolt cutters? too much.

shooting through the floor- i can't believe it hadn't occured to me earlier that the beams would be way too much for the bullets

i really enjoy how gun-friendly mythbusters is, especially considering how much shooting they do around here, in Oakland and other nearby places in Cal.

Google picking combination locks. There IS a methodology that will net you the combination and NOT harm the lock. It requires knowledge, feel and math!

RE: Shooting through the floor....

I find it amusing that people are discussing the realism of a particular scene in a movie about Vampires and Werewolves. :) Isn't that kind of like questioning why Elmer Fudd's gun never runs out of bullets?

Then again, watching Kate Beckinsale dressed in a skin-tight rubber suit, I'll believe pretty much anything.

Go to the masterlock website and they will have directions on how to get them to send you the combination. I believe you have to give the number off the back and a picture of the lock (showing the serial number on back) to show that it is not locking anything.

Every time I've had to break into something with a lock on it (and by break in, I really do mean LEGALLY enter by the same methods others would use illegally) at work, I've just used bolt cutters to clip right through the hasp. At home, I have GOOD quality locks, so the one time I had to access a lock without the key, I had much more trouble. Then I realized the door was installed with the hinges on the outside....
I wouldn't shoot the body of the lock, I'd aim for where the hasp passes THROUGH the lock plate. Break either of those, and you're good.
For in-door locks, shooting straight through the lock probably isn't the best bet. The cone shaped trim pieces are almost always MUCH thinner than the front plate. Angle the gun down, and it would punch right through.

Floors...

The movie's nice because she shoots through a concrete floor without ricochets or splatter! Those rounds cut through the floor like ... um... lightsabers through butter or somethin' :uhoh:
As for wood floors... next time you're at the range, try cutting through a bunch of 2x10's (through the 10" side;)). Putting holes in 3/4" plywood is the easy part.

While it is true there are better ways to get through a lock or to shoot a lock. They are the Mythbusters they are not trying to teach people how to disable locks but to confirm or bust the myth of movie style shooting of locks.

When the Goldfinger myth aired they only showed Jamie getting painted. Later we found out Adam was also painted. Remember just because they do it does not mean we see it so we do not know how the sample size. It could be small or they could just cut a lot of stuff out to make run time.
