"Secure Access to Firearms Enhancement (SAFE) Act of 2005'"

How do they come up with these acronymns and names for acts and bills?

I wouldn't assume the bill would be recognizable by the time it was passed, assuming it ever got out of committee.

If this passes, then it will, in effect, be very close to the Iraq constitution, which says that one can own a gun only with a license from the government. Our version would become, one can carry a gun only with a license from the government. We have that now in most States, only now we are asking the federal government to validate that infringement of the RKBA. I believe the essential question of whether licensing is constitutional should instead be addressed.

Do you really think that?

This bill allows Vermont and Alaska residents to carry anywhere WITHOUT A LICENSE so long as their state does not require licenses.

It allows for CCW with no permits.

I think what you will get is an interstate license, entirely administered by the feds, perhaps BATF. To suppose that dramatic differences among State requirements will not be in dispute is just not realistic. Having an Alaskan freely carrying in a strict State is just not going to fly when relying only upon State cooperation. You either acknowledge that the whole licensing thing is invalid, or you have the feds be the mediator..

Anyone have an update on where HR 1243 stands?

I just called Congressman Coble again to voice support for bringing this thing up for a vote.

I finally got snail mail from my Congressman. Text, dated 1/24/2006, follows:
Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 1243, the Secure Access to Firearms Enhancement (SAFE) Act of 2005.

Your concerns to ensure that law-abiding American citizens are entitled to carry firearms in other states are appreciated. This legislation would amend the Federal criminal code to provide for enforcement for the carrying of certain concealed firearms in different States by persons who are not prohibited by Federal law from possessing, transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm.

Out Founding Fathers created the 2nd amendment to ensure a citizen's right to self-protection. This right should be protected for all law abiding citizens even during a time of great uncertainty or fear. H.R. 1243 is currently under consideration in the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security where it awaits further action.

Please know that I will keep your views in mind as this legislation progresses through the 109th Congress.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns.

Yours truly,
Tom Price, M.D.
Member of Congress

Not bad, Tom. Keep up the good work.

Why do we think that the Federal Government forcing the states to do ANYTHING is a good idea?

According to the US Constitution, the powers not specifically granted to the Federal Government are reserved to the states.

Thank You exactly!!!!

Anyway given how the SCOTUS is abusing the Interstate commerse clause these days....I'm sure this bill even if it becomes law will be unconstitutional. This court loves results-based jurisprudence.

The whole licensing thing is invalid anyway. IMHO:evil:
