I am going to be moving from NJ to NC in September. I am excited to finally be able to get a carry permit I can use more. I currently have a FL non resident permit, I used to use in PA alot but they have since changed there laws on non resident permits.

Anyway I am moving to wake County and I am looking for a good carry class. I was going to go with the county run facility (Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center) but I also found fuquay gun and gold, which is $10 more but includes ammo and a rental. I don't need the rental but if it comes with free ammo it is a plus.
Has any one taken any of these classes? How are they?
I see the fuquay gun and gold has a choice of instructors any recommendations?

Also my other question, are there any good ranges around the holly Springs, fuquay area. How is the wake county range, it is $10/hr is that average for that area?

Welcome!

I took mine from a guy that Fuquay Gun used to promote long ago. No sure if he is still involved with them or if they now do their own.

The only info I have is that his name was Charlie and the place he did the CCW classes was at his home near Duncan NC, very close to Fuquay. He was a veteran trainer that made it pretty painless other than the mandated videos that are fairly dull. Sorry I don't have more info.

The free ammo thing is not a big deal since there really isn't much target work in the course. Just the qualification shots. Class has mandated hour requirements, a paper test and then shooting qual. I was the first complete with both. :D

Either way, the guys at Fuquay Gun are good folk and have treated me well over the years. Their new store is well stocked with mostly modern guns and equipment.

Never been to the Holly Springs range. It has weird hours since it is also a LEO training facility as well. I used to shoot at Personal Handgun Defense off Tryon Road in Raleigh as it was near enough work I could go at lunch. Small range but functional.

Greetings, and welcome to The High Road. And to Wake County.

I'm a CHP instructor in Wake County. I limit my classes to no more than 5 students. PM me if I can help.

He sounds like a great guy. Good news: There are no mandated videos. I didn't know there ever was. I know a lot of guys use videos in their class, but they're not required.

The Wake county range is super nice, I got qualified there but ended up not shooting due to moving further away. The other range mentioned, personal handgun, is good, but small. You will have to wait unless you show up early or on a weekday.

Either class that you mentioned sounds fine. If the wake county range class includes a qualification card to use their range, I would go with that.

I could be mistaken on the mandatory part. Perhap it was just his way of covering some of the material. They were so old they were comical. Early eighties vintage- bad hair and wide collars. They might have even been on VHS ;)
