Let's get on this guys and gals. Get your reps ear ringing this is NOT going to be an easy bill to pass.

Tomorrow, Representative MARK HILTON will be introducing HB 390 whose long title gives a good explanation of its purpose: an act to repeal the state law that requires a person to obtain a license or permit to purchase, sell, give away, receive, or otherwise transfer a pistol or crossbow.

Central to this - not to mention almost all pro-gun legislation in North Carolina over the last 16 years - is GRNC. Knowing that the National Instant Check System (NICS) has made these permits both redundant and archaic. Not to mention the fact that sheriffs have, for years, offered a variety of obstacles to purchase permit applications.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

When taking up residency in North Carolina I was perturbed about the “Purchasing Permit” requirement. The really nettlesome issues were being charged for the criminal back ground check by the Clerk of Courts office for each request, character reference requirements, and the sheriffs’ authority to limit the number being issued. The state rifle and pistol association in their news letter referred to the “Purchasing Permit” as a vestige of Jim Crow era.

Life long residents of North Carolina didn’t seem to mind the system and actually defended it.

It’s a relic of the past and a contributing reason as to why citizens apply for the NC-CHP to avoid the “Purchasing Permit” requirement/hassle.

With the Federal check system in place its redundancy but then local government’s love redundancy.

The NC Legislature this year has been more Pro Second Amendment than
any other session I can remember. They have introduced some outstanding
legislation regarding concealed carry, castle doctrine and now this common
sense bill. Like a previous poster mentioned, one reason I got my concealed
carry permit was because I got tired of driving to the county courthouse
to apply for a pistol permit every time my allotment ran out. I am a NC native
and this is one change in gun purchasing laws I don't mind at all.

Just be sure to hit up your local reps for this bill. It is not going to be an easy passage at all. The Sheriffs make a LOT of money from these permits. They will fight it tooth and nail. Dems will not support it either and the weaker 2A Reps may not support it either.

If we want this, all of us in NC need to speak up loud and clear.

Sorry loveless, GRNC is Grass Roots North carolina. They are the state 2A advocacy group in North Carolina. They have folks in Raleigh pushing hard for us. Their president actually authored part of our CCW laws.

They and the NRA are the 1/2 punch for getting anywhere with restoring 2A rights in NC.

I should say they along with NC residents who are willing to make themselves heard...The reason this has been one of the best 2A years in a long while in NC is because of those NC residents who went to the polls in November and gave us a Rep majority in the House and Senate. THIS is proof guys our vote does count when we work together and follow through in our commitments to 2A at thew polls.
