Need a .22 rifle for a new shooter

Putting in another good word for the Ruger American. It also has really nice iron sights on it.

It's also a huge plus that you can get magazines for it practically anywhere since it's the same mag as used in the 10/22. I love the bluing on mine too.

I'm partial to my Marin 980S... Easy to keep clean stainless, weighted nicely for all day shooting and accuracy. Shoots great with open sights and wE put a 3x9 scope on it For added accuracy

We have a 7 rd mag (supplied with rifle) and bought another 10 rd mag

The composite stock holds up to all kinds of environments

Price was right when we bought it 12 years ago... I presume the price is still good

All the new guns are pretty good, but buy the best you can afford. Savage is accurate but stocks and magazines are not ideal. Ruger American makes a better stock and magazine set up and the ones I have shot are very accurate. The next step up and it is a big one is CZ. Everything about them is good. Nice blued metal, a couple styles of nice wood stocks. And superior accuracy across the board, widely proven in competition. A used Remington or Winchester are good, as are some older Mossbergs. But I would still go CZ unless you can afford an Anshutz, they are the best in everyway.
Some guys like the Russian Biathalon rifles but they have really gone up in price and for the money I'd rather have an Anshutz.
Someone said you can buy a Savage then put a different stock on it, but then you would have been better off buying a CZ to start with. Occasionally someone will report a Savage out shooting a CZ, but that is a very rare exception. Rimfire Central is a great treasure trove of info all things .22. Modified Ruger 10/22's are big over there. I have one that is great, but if you prefer bolts, go CZ. My CZ's outshoot my Ruger. But at a Turkey shoot a guy with a stock 10/22 almost tied me as I won the relay with a CZ 452 American.

In a bolt gun something in a CZ would serve you and your grand daughter very well. I let my kids choose what they wanted when we went shopping for .22s. My son first wanted a pump or a lever action but went with a semi-auto as he wanted to put a scope on it eventually. My daughter wasn't interested in rifles; she went with a semi-auto pistol.

.22 Long Rifle

Remington .22 rifles.

Ruger .22 Rifles.

Henry .22 Rifles

Find an honest gunsmith. Tell him it's for a youngster who likes to shoot, etc.

He will fix, repair, calibrate any of the above. When he returns the rifle to you it will be better than a new one! Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Hard to find a used Henry though. People fall in love with them and keep them

forever.

Two words: Used and Pawn shop.

CZ 455 ultra lux gets good reviews. Unfortunately they are hard to get so I ordered one from my lgs sight unseen . He told me one week more than 2 months ago.

Under $1000....

Well you can get a whole lot for that. Here is my set-up and I have about $850 into it. It is a Savage Mark II FVSR 16.5" threaded bull barrel fluted, A Boyds SS evolution stock, Leupold rifleman rings, Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x, and a Harris knockoff bipod with a pod-lok. The rifle alone can be had for around $300

It is extremely accurate.

Here is a pic of 10 different types of ammo, some match grade and some cheap stuff. I wrote the prices of each box above the target, it is per 50rd box and some of them are expensive. These are all 5 rd groups. I also did it at a 100 yards but don't have a pic. The Eley club and Eley Target were the best at 100yards as well.

Here is a side view of my left handed custom stock CZ, with a right handed bolt ( my choice ) ( allowing me to maintain my left trigger and left cheek anchor )and still be able to rack a round using my right hand.

Another vote for the Savage Mark II. I bought one with a bull barrel, plastic stock and an OK scope used, then got a Boyd's stock (and the trigger guard as mentioned earlier by somebody else). All in, about $330. In just about anybody's hands it will do quarter-sized or smaller groups at 50 yards until you get bored.

Wow, a solid grand will buy a lot of .22 rifle and scope. I second the recommendation for a CZ American. My wife kills a lot of ground squirrels with hers in .17 HRM. She has a Leupold 3X9 variable on that rifle but the caliber justifies the variable. I have a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x fixed on a S&W AR 15-.22 that's seems to be a decent scope.

Good on you for encouraging young shooters.
