I am wanting to load some 300 grain hollow points for my 45-70 for ohio deer. I want a load that is pretty flat shooting say 2200-2300fps. I also want to load the same bullet at say 1000-1300fps for my son to shoot. What powder is good for both with actual published data? Thanks.

Marlin guide gun. I may have to use cast and trail boss for my son. Would have liked to get only one box of bullets though.

IMR 4198 seems pretty versatile for the .45-70. So far, I have only loaded plinking loads for my Marlin 1895 22". Using Lasercast 350 gr. hard cast lead and 25 grains of IMR 4198 I get around 1000-1100 fps and the recoil is fairly mild. I believe that same powder will get your 300 grain @ 2300 fps target, but if I remember correctly, Reloader 7 will get highest velocity with most .45-70 bullets. Lots of load data out there, fortunately.

Trail Boss for that slow.

None I am aware of.

With a 350 Gr jacketed bullet in my .458 Win mag I use H322 for full loads, AA 5744 for ".45-70" range loads, and Trail Boss for about 1200 FPS.

I would suggest using 5744, 3031 or 4895.
No need to pump the velocity up on those 300 gr bullets. Using the "trapdoor" data that bullet will be doing everything and more than a 454 casull handgun, and you'll have to look awfully hard to find someone that says that's not a good game getter.

There's another thread going about this. I was shooting a Sharps in competition. I tried a bunch of powders/loads. I had a pretty good load using 4895 with a fiber 28ga shotgun wad. I had the best luck with 3031 (and eliminated the PIA wad). :)

Well, I ended up buying some trailboss yesterday. I will load ome cast powder puffs for my 9 year old to shoot with this. I have enough Leverevolution rounds to last me a while then I will get some 4895 to load some speedy 300 grainers. The part of ohio I live in is like a dirt desert. This is why I want a flat shooter. As flat as a 45-70 gets anyways.

Try some blackpowder and put it on paper. Then go shoot some NRA registered competition. You'll likely findout that smokeless wasn't doing near what you thought it was.

9 year old might have a time trying to safely manage a fullsized 45-70 rifle.
Trailboss the velocity won't approach anything close to what you can get from smokeless powders better suited for the cartridge. So forget about anything associated with "flat shooting".
Then there's the logistical problems. The sight settings will be different for each load, you're likely to find yourself in your favored stand and a magazine full of the kids mousephart loads.. best scenario you'll miss and learn a lesson cheaply, worst case you'll cripple a deer and learn a lesson the hard way.
I'ld really suggest you look at finding one load that you both can shoot in the rifle and leave it be , until one of you gets his own rifle.

Youth season is 2 or 3 weeks before regular gun season. I plan to resight the gun in between.

Old ad: The .45-70 Gould Express (330 gr HP, now Lyman 457122) with 85 grains of Hazard's Ducking Powder shoots practically as flat as a .45-90-300 and with greater accuracy."

Ken Waters got a 300 gr JSP to 2000 fps with 4198 and 3031 but accuracy was not good with 3031 in his Marlin.

I load 43 grains of 4198 with a NOE 350 gr. RF bullet, I shot a deer at 55 yards with it this year and the performance was outstanding, it blew through the deer and blew out some innards on the opposite side. When I hit the deer it just stood there and I thought I had missed it, was going to hit it again and it just slowly fell over before I could shoot. I have used shotguns and muzzle-loaders and and nothing gave me the results this load did. the recoil is manageable and is accurate.
