Need a better funnel

I’m looking for suggestions for a powder funnel better than the plastic universal Hornady one I’m using. I’m getting leakage on my 224 Valkyrie and 6mm ARC cases, and static cling is driving me crazy. I see a pretty big variety available on the internet i.e. MidwayUSA, so what’s popular?

Satern and Precision Hardcore funnels work well for me. I don't have experience with Area 419.

Be prepared for a little sticker shock, but in my opinion their worth the price.

Thanks, these look good, and yes, pricey. The problem I’m having with 6ARC & 224V is the case shoulder touches the inside of the funnel before the case mouth is seated, causing leakage. These are two cartridges that have a relatively small bullet in a fat case. I’m hoping these suggestions help with that.

I use these:

I'd have to see how they fit the 6ARC and 224V to see if the set would alleviate your problem. I'll run out to the shop and check now.

Precision Hardcore Gear funnels are nice.

I've got a relatively cheap Redding universal funnel, the little green one. It's always worked fine, but since I started loading a 22 caliber case mouth, it's showed its weakness. It still works, but the seal is sketchy. It does seal on the mouth, but that mouth is pretty narrow, so the funnel doesn't balance securely.

I think it's acrylic. I have some high-end reloading gear, but I just don't think some of these really costly machined billet funnels would add a lot to my practice. I'm betting there's another plastic funnel out there from Hornady, Lyman, or RCBS that will do well for smaller mouths and perhaps another one that will work better for large. Maybe I'll just get the Satern for 22 and use the Redding for the rest.

Cheap, expensive, metal, or plastic it has to fit the case mouth without rocking. If it does that all is well. A good case trimmer that cuts the case mouth precise and square is a requirement. It's not a fair fight for the funnel if the trimmer doesn't do it's part.

While I respect the opinions of several members here such as @Walkalong and @Litetrigger i ordered a Saturn funnel in 6.5 .264 flavor and it looks awful I’m pretty sure a blind person fashioned it I can’t in good consciousness recommend it Now the Lyman set I have I like very much and I find it works well!

I agree the Saturn funnels are the best yet: They fit well over the case neck without need to hold then in position and their light weight prevents tipping the case. After my first try with one I liked it so well I ordered one in every caliber. View attachment 1193516
Love these, only have one in .22 cal, but saves me a lot of headaches.

If I get what you are saying, we had the same problem with 270WSM. One of these solved it:

It's plastic, but static doesn't seem to be much of a problem. And it's pretty slick going direct from the scale to the case. Eliminates the middle man. You do have to hold the case though.

Thanks for the advice. I read some reviews and placed an order for a few of the Satern funnels. I’ll post my result & opinion when I get them.

I have some Satern funnels and they work well.

I also use an RCBS plastic funnel but it is a bit iffy when you get down to 22 caliber and bellow as far as leaking. I load 204 Ruger and 17 Rem and most funnels do not work well with those cartridges.

It may not be available any more, but I have Frankfort Arsenal funnel where there is a number if different powder drop attachments that match the powder drop to the cartridge size.

Whatever funnel you buy, keep the neck of the funnel small. At some point in your reloading career you may drop a bullet into your powder. You can't fish it out of the can, but you can hear it in there. And you can't fish it out of the PM hopper, even though you see it pour into the hopper. It's a devil-ish problem, knowing that some day it will reach the powder metering device and mess with your loads.

Chasing after a bullet in your powder with pliers, tweezers or a spoon reminds me of those police chases on YouTube. It's crazy. As soon as the bullet sees you coming, it will bury itself faster than a periwinkle on a sandy beach !! o_O

The solution is to use a small-neck funnel so that when you transfer the powder from the hopper back into the powder can (or vice versa), the bullet gets caught in the funnel.

I second the Lyman kit

Lyman kit is good, not great, but definitely works, gave mine to my younger son
