Need advice on my first carry gun

Or am I better off putting my money towards ammo, holsters, and accessories for my SR9C?

The EC9S is very compact. That is good but it's also bad. It makes it pretty hard to shoot well, makes the lack of real estate for large hands challenging to stay away from the controls. Recoil is pretty snappy for a 9mm. More so than a larger .40 S&W or .45 ACP. Different type or height sights can be challenging as the sights are integrated. It does have a pretty good trigger. It is the budget version of the LC9S (which has conventional sights in milled slots). I own an EC9S and think it is an excellent value for the very low prices they can be found for but I don't think it's a good first pistol. Think of it as doubling down on a Shield.

I think the SR9C at $330 is an excellent choice and I would spend my money on more magazines, some good holsters (you will find it takes some experimentation to find what you prefer and cheap are seldom a good value), good belt, ammo etc, Try to find a source of decent ammo for a good price (I can get Blazer Aluminum "Seconds" for under $8 a box locally and they have been very reliable) and practice. Im not sure but I believe all the SR9C may be stainless slide. The black may just be an applied finish. My LGS is one of the largest Ruger Dealers in the country (so large the President of Ruger was there for the Security-9 Intro) and he is up to $299.99 now on the SR9C and usually has very aggressive pricing so I suspect $330 is very good pricing for a dealer who is not ordering 500+ pistols at a time.

Disclaimer: I do not own a SR9C but the ones I have fired have been a fine reliable pistol and I prefer the trigger feel to the Security-9. Think of it as an affordable alternative to the M&P M2.0 Subcompact or Glock G26. In my opinion you give up very little and if I wasn't already invested in the M&P Platform it would be on my short list.

Congrats on SR9C. I plan to make that my next Ruger.

On the EC9S - get the LC9S or LC9S Pro instead. The EC9 has fixed non-replaceable / non adjustable sights.
The LC9S has dove tailed sights which allows you to swap them out for tritium night sights or fiber optic sights or both. It's a few $ more and worth it in my opinion.

I'm pretty much in the SR9c camp when it comes to getting a decent 9mm. for concealed carry. I found it to be very ergonomic with a great trigger and sights. The Security 9 is another way to go as is the S&W Shield. If you can find a range that has any of these guns as rentals it would definitely go a long way in helping you make up your mind.

I watched him shoot himself in the leg while he was shooting at a lizard running around right under his feet. The .380 round didn't even go through his pants. Weird angle probably what ever. He was very lucky. It dropped him to the ground and he thought he was seriously hurt at first.

Still, I bet neither you nor he would be willing to try recreating that event. ;)

Sounds like the 9mm that wouldn't go through the jacket. Or even the .22 WMR that went through 3A Body Armor. Stuff happens but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Winchester White Box .380 ACP FMJ-FP will go through 4LD and exit 32" of 10% Gel never to be seen again which is double what .40 S&W 180 gr Gold Dot will do.

You sought counsel, made an educated decision.
Spend $$ on a high end holster. A crappy holster can make you dislike a good gun.

I did seek counsel, and I appreciate everyone's input!

I am going to pick up a quality holster and some ammo for it and forget about getting another pistol for a while.

I just got an exciting call that my SR9C actually arrived early! I am going after work to pick it up, so now i get to practice with it over the weekend.

If you have an Academy they did have Federal Black Pack 115 FMJ Brass Case for $39.99 for 250 rounds if it's still on sale. That's if you need some decent quality practice ammo that won't break the bank.

Enjoy the SR9C...

Well I went to a friend's house last night and he gave me an alien wear holster that he didn't like. It's kind of big but I wore it all day today and it is comfortable for an all day carry. Plus in the winter time with extra clothes it doesn't stick out.

Got to put some ammo through the gun out at the in laws today. Definitely need some practice, but for my first time with the gun I would say my accuracy is ok. I'll post a picture of the first 10 shots I took. It shoots a little low but I am not going to adjust the sights just yet. I just need to keep practicing and learning how my gun handles, but I must say I think I made a good choice.

I actually use an Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.5 with my M&P M2.0 Compact. Very comfortable for me and conceals well.

Normally the Kydex Shell for a different handgun is free but since you are not the original owner of the holster I think the specific shell for your handgun is $15.

You can of course reshape the Kydex yourself.by applying heat with the gun in the holster (unloaded of course).

If you already have the correct shell or the info is not applicable disregard.

Enjoy your pistol.

PS usually tbe low rounds are from anticipating and tightening your grip. I wouldn't worry about it until you.spend more time getting comfortable with the pistol.

Thanks for the tips. The kydex shell actually grips my gun really well so I haven't bothered trying to change it. We will see what happens with time though.

I think I do tighten my grip with anticipation of recoil. I am trying to get over that and hope it will just come with time and practice

Was that shell actually made for an SR9c? Or does it just seem to fit well? I'd suggest that if it was actually made for a different pistol, you should go ahead and replace it with one made for an SR9c.

It's not made for a SR9c but it fits extremely well. I can hold the thing upside down and shake it and the pistol stays put

Then you'll be shocked when you see how well a holster holds a pistol when it fits properly.

I went to alien gears website and it looks like you have to pick a holster based on size. My buddy that I got it from has a gun similar in size to mine, so I am thinking if I heat it up with a hairdryer like one member suggested I should be able to get a more custom fit?

It looks to me like what you're choosing is the size of the backing, with a shell custom fit to an SR9c. Look at the "micro size," right where the barrel points down in the picture. Now look at the "full" size. See how much more backing sticks down? The text below the picture even says that the shells "will fit any size material."

Considering your restricted budget, I think the Ruger is a good choice.

Ditto. Better quality than semi-automatic Tauruses. Have you considered any Bersa models? My first handgun, ( which I bought for concealed carry in the first place since I wasn't fooling around....and I'm not implying that you are) was an all metal Bersa Thunder Ultra Carry in .45ACP.. I don't usually carry that gun anymore for two reasons. 1. It gives me hammerbite and 2. I felt that 45ACP was overkill for a modest EDC. Its not inaccurate at normal defensive distances under 7 yards... at about 7 yards I can pull a Makarov from my hip and blast something the size of a basketball from that distance without even using my sights. Therefore, for me the Makarov is the better defensive pistol. I can also carry four extra magazines in my pocket without feeling weighed down. But anyway, my Bersa is still a very well-made gun for the money which was about $425 brand new, inbursa has many other models to choose from and has now joined the lightweight striker-fired polymer movement. In addition to my Makarov and other 9x18 pistols, I also frequently carry a Smith & Wesson 9 mm Shield. I got it for an absolute steal at $257. and usually go for much closer to 400. the day that I bought my shield online I spent several hours at some local gun stores browsing the weapons. The last gun I looked at was a striker-fired Bersa. Although I'm very pleased with my shield I have not looked back much that Bersa was still very nice, and if I was in the market for a new handgun I would certainly consider one again. Very good guns for the money partly because the company doesn't invest a lot of money in advertising. They just make decent guns that speak for themselves.

I have carried and still own the SR9C. For the money it is hard to beat. It's just a lot of pistol for the money. My current go to for concealed carry is a smaller Shield 9mm. It conceals very well. I shoot it well enough 10 yards and under. I've not had an issue with either firearm in over 4000 rounds on each. I'd say either would be a fine choice, but they are very different firearms. The SR9 or the SR9C are both quite a bit bigger than the Shield, thus likely harder to conceal. The Ruger is heavier and everything that goes with a heavier firearm applies. That said I think the Ruger is the better firearm for long term durability. I carry the Shield primarily for its concealability, and it is dead reliable as well.

I've owned two of the previous versions of the Taurus G2 (used to be called the Millenium-Pro) and both were rock solid and very good size & weight for carry. The SA trigger with second strike capability is a good way to go. It's not a tuned 1911 SA trigger by any stretch of the imagination, but it is more than adequate to get hits on target inside of 15 yds.

I have a co-worker who has an SR9 and I was not impressed at all. Trigger was long and heavy.
