Need Firing Pin For Taurus PT-22

I imagine if Taurus considers it a restricted part, and won't sell you one.
They won't sell them to any of the parts houses either.

You will have to send them the gun and let them replace it.

It's not the exact same gun, and it is very doubtful the firing pins will interchange.

(1) I got an estimate from FedEx and UPS of about $75 for overnight air shipment which is required by both companies. If Taurus charges me for return shipment and determines it was my fault, the total cost to fix it is more than it's worth. I was hoping a member of the forum had a spare that they would sell...So much for the Taurus "lifetime guarantee".

(2) I've already tried installing the firing pin of a Beretta 22LR and it is not the same and won't work in the PT-22.

How old is the gun?

If it is still under warranty, I would call Taurus and ask that they send you a call tag to cover shipping to them. They should ship it back to you on thier dime too.

rc

I talked to Taurus already and they won't pay for shipping to them. I don't think I want to pay even $75 to fix a gun that is plagued with other problems.

It makes no difference how old the gun is or how many owners there have been. The warranty follows the gun, not the owner. It sounds like a good warranty, but not for a cheap gun with many problems...Unless of course you live within reasonable driving distance from the service facility.

If I can't find a pin, it does make an interesting paperweight for the home office.

Call Taurus and ask to speak with Christian the CS manager, give him your serial number and ask him to send you a firing pin replacement under warranty, do not offer to buy it, he might ask you to send the broken one in exchange.
Good Luck

There are no govt. regs requiring you to ship overnite via Fedex or UPS--only their own regs. Ship it it to Taurus regular ground and tell the shipper it's "high speed punch parts" or some such. Shipping will be MUCH cheaper. I suggest not putting the name of Taurus on the address as this invites theft. Address it to "Service Dept." at their correct address. My local UPS office ofter open packages to inspect prior to shipping and may cut you off. I've found the way around this is to use a private drop-off store serviced by UPS. Seems they don't get checked.

Appears I was wrong. Thanks for the info. It does appear the law does not mandate overnight shipping.

The problem with not declaring it as a firearm, is if get's lost or stolen or damaged. Then, good luck trying to get their insurance to pay for it. The problem with using a private drop off UPS or FedEx is that they are not owned by the shipper. It's a franchise type set up, a so-called "Third Party Shipper". Again, if get's lost or stolen or damaged. Then, good luck trying to get their insurance to pay for it.

I have in the past gotten new firing pins from Taurus for the PT-22 but I am a Dealer. I bought four new firing pins for two PT-22's. I went thru all four of them on one range trip. A total of six firing pins for less than 300 rounds fired, all different kinds of ammo. Both of those PT-22's are now in the safe labled *^#)&! Keep yer powder dry, Mac.

It's Federal law that the shipper must be notified that the package contains a firearm, the law does not specify it must be shipped overnight. The overnight requirement may be specified by the shipper to mitigate the possibility of theft on transit...the real reason is probably they can charge a high price for over night.

Per my conversation with UPS, UPS requires over night shipment AND the package must be shipped from a distribution center NOT a UPS store or pick-up by a driver. IN ADDITION, the package cannot be sealed and must be available for inspection of the contents at the distribution center before shipment...in my opinion, too much of a hassle.

Per my conversation with FedEx, FedEx also requires over night shipment BUT does NOT require inspection of the contents and the package CAN be picked up by a driver...a much better way to go compared to UPS.

The kel-Tec post you refer to starts out with the poster stating that he is NOT A LAWYER...need I say more?
I would rather be in a position of not needing a lawyer in the first place by NOT trying to interpret Federal law myself or with the aid of self-declared non-lawyer...wouldn't you?

I've never handled a PT22 but if you are able to separate the frame from the slide it would behoove you to do so and send Taurus the slide only for firing pin repair, the way I understand it, only the receiver (frame) is considered the fire arm.

cuba, you are correct regarding the frame versus the slide. In fact, we use a similar principle for shipping handguns via FedEx and UPS. Per their shipping regs: "A Handgun must be shipped via Priority Overnite". However, handgun parts are just parts. Their concern is not about serial numbers or "Controlled Items". Their concern is that one of the crooks working in their depots steal it, uses it in a crime, etc. so they make YOU pay for really fast shipping. That way, they only have it in their possession for a short period of time. It's called liabilty reduction. You can ship a frame via Ground. We have our Customers field strip the handgun, keep some parts at home so it's no longer functional and ship the rest as "Parts". Yes, it's legal and not in violation of the shippers regulations. The trick is to ask yourself: Can the parts in this box be assembled into a complete and functional handgun. If not, then it's just a box of parts. (Note: ATF DOES consider the frame the firearm)

Funny story about crooks working in shipping depots. Besides owning and operating Mac's Shootin' Irons, I work in law enforcement. I was on the nite shift so I would take packages with me that were being shipped out, secure them overnite and then go by the shipper in the morning to ship. I would have to wait about 15 minutes for the desk to open so I would sit in the parking lot and watch the nite crew leaving. My thoughts were like:
Yup, he just got out of jail last month. Oh, yeah I know him. Hmmm, the bruises on his head are still visible. I thought he went to prison for a couple of years. Dang! When did that one get out? Hey, I though she was dead from an OD! heh heh. Keep yer powder dry, Mac.

Just to recap my conversatiom with the Taurus Service Department months ago:

Q. Send me a firing pin, I'm willing to pay for it.

A. NO

Q. Can I send the slide only?

A. NO

It will cost about $75 to send the gun to them via UPS or FedEx to fix a part that probably won't last 100 rounds before it breaks again...So much for Taurus "service" and their "Lifetime Warranty".

Ronto, I don't know who you talked to but if you were to ask to speak with Christian the manager give him your serial number, I'm sure the conversation would not go the same, and you would get the matter resolved, and remember do not offer to pay for it unless asked to.

Reply to cuba...

I've been trying for the past month to talk to the customer service manager. All I get is a recorded message on Kimberlys' phone whose message claims she is the customer service manager...customer "service" that never answers the phone.

I would start from scratch and ask that a firing pin be sent under the warranty clause and if your met with the same nonsense then ask to speak with Christian @ extension #238, or you can try the main man.

For the record, the extension numbers in your post are not valid. The customer sevice rep I spoke to will not give me the extension of the mamager, probably to deflect calls by head hunters.

In order to memorialize the continuing saga of trying to get my Taurus PT-22 fixed, after many attempts I finally talked to a customer service representative that agreed that Taurus should pay the FedEx shipping cost to ship the gun to them. The next day FedEx picked it up. It was shipped overnight air and about 10 days later I received the repaired gun back from Taurus at no cost to me.

Lesson learned, as is the case with most things in life, in things great and small: NEVER GIVE UP!
