I know that sounds lame but, what are the reasons for the different actions. Does a DAO mean that the pistol is not semi auto? I think I understand DA/SA, or SA,but, ah, I need a tutorial on the subject.

A DAO handgun could be a semiauto pistol or a revolver like the S&W 642. Basically it means there is no way to put the gun in SA mode. Pulling the trigger fully cocks the hammer and then releases it to fire the gun. The hammer is then down. With a DA/SA pistol the hammer would be cocked after the first shot and in SA. With a regular double action revolver you can cock the hammer with your thumb and put it in SA.

Don't forget about SAO pistols where the trigger only releases the hammer, but someone(or something) has to cock the hammer first.

DAO= double action only, pulling the trigger cocks and releases the hammer

SA= single action, pulling the trigger only releases the hammer, it has to be cocked by other means

DA/SA=double action/single action, the first round can be fired in double action, all other rounds are single action with the hammer being cocked by the slide

Striker Fired(aka SAO)= a combination of DAO and SA, the striker is partially cocked by the action of the slide, pulling the trigger completes the cocking process and releases the striker

Thanks for being serios burningsquirrels. I will check it out right now.
