The polyethelene rod came in. The messed up the order and set a 4 ft. instead of a 3 ft. I'll have an extra 14 + in. piece to play with!

Now, I just need the time to cut, shape and join everything together. Finish cane photo will be posted once completed.

have a Happy Independence Day weekend! and to all you former military folks - thank you for y0ur service!

Took me about three hours over the weekend, to manually reduce about 3 inches off the bottom of the cane to a 7/8" diameter. The bottom collar and cane tip fit well, with no adhesive needed (difficult as heck to get it on!)

This rod is the same material as the Cold Steel African Walking Stick, the Irish Blackthorn Cane, and the non-returning boomerang. Once complete (I figure an additional three hours of manual work for the top collar and to joint the Fritz brass handle), since I sized it specifically to me, it will be my daily go-to cane ... and will pass TSA scrutiny without any problems.

I think that this is exactly what you're looking for! Although I would advise getting a 7/8 in. diameter rod - no need to trim it down!

If you can't find one ... find a friend who has a lathe ... MUCH easier than working it down by hand (dremel, spokeshave & electric sander).

Thanks. Not a lot of free time after work (not a project that you can do 5 or 10 minutes, put down and pick up later - needs batch time). I'll have pix up as soon as I finish.

Check out http://fallingfruit.org This is a website for food sources for survivalists, and foragers. I've been adding in sites I am aware of (including fish and game).

Is this close to what you have in mind? It is made of the same material as the ColdSteel African Walking Stick and Irish Blackthorn Cane. Check out the video on the Irish Blackthorn Cane. This is a 1 inch diameter, and has a solid Brass Fritz handle. It will pass TSA with no issues. It will do what you want it to do, as a support cane, and as a defensive stick.

AHPD1992,

Thanks. You can search for 1 inch diameter UHWM Polyethelene Rod, get a 36 inch length, the other parts (or to pick woods) are at walkingcaneco.com for a DIY cane. I don't have a power tool shop, so mine was totally hand crafted, about 5 hours of manual labor to cut and shape both ends, so that the collars, handle and tip fit properly. Had I known in advance, would have done with either a thinner rod, or larger collars, handle and tip

ChilTech500,

They don't offer Ebony, but do have a very nice hardwood shaft selection ... http://www.walkingcaneco.com/walking-canes/Walking-Cane-Shafts/Walking-Cane-Shafts.asp

Thanks for your efforts Craftsman, Nice looking outcome.

The pic of the finished product on my PC isn't very large or clear. I hear what you're saying about 7/8. I really like the handle btw.

I find my ebony cane quite awesome, I wonder how it would perform vs the material you used? It is not light, the ebony is quite dense.

Time for you cane owners to start a picture thread with descriptions, if thier isn't one already. It may help those of us that will be needing one soon figure out what will work for us or just add to the confusion.
