No idea on expansion, but I know my Ruger P94 shoots the 155 and 165 grain bullets much better than the 180's. Expansion kinda becomes a moot point if you miss your target, or wind up hitting a non-critical area.

Some .40 expaion/penetration ifo from DoubleTap Ammunition:

All of these tests were done using 10% ballistic gelatin provided by Vyse gelatin using all FBI protocols and 4 layers of denim and two layers of light cotton T-shirt in front of the gelatin.

DoubleTap .40 S&W Penetration / expansion
165gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1200fps - 14.0" / .70"
180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 110fps - 14.75" / .68"

I prefer the 180's over the 165 for the deeper penetration, usually depending on brand. I like the Winchester 180 Ranger Talon and the Federal Tactical 180's or Speer Gold Dot 180's. These seem to perform ideally. To my way of thinking I like the extra weight for better momentum over the increase in velocity. I just believe heavier rounds hit harder. The extra velocity of 50 or 100 FPS really is not that big a deal. I like heavy bullets for the best penetration. This is from Winchester LE catalog.

40 S&W 165 Talon 1140 velocity
Bare Gell: 12.7 # expansion .61
Four Layers denim: 13.2 # expansion .70
Heavy Cloth 14.3 # expansion.68

40 S&W 180 Talon 990 velocity
Bare Gell 13.8 # expansion .60
Four Layers denim 14.3 # expansion .70
Heavy Cloth 13.4 # expansion .64

You can't go wrong with either round they are pretty close, but I still prefer the extra weight for more momentum.

From what I have heard from LE is that most have gone to the 165 because they don't need the penetration of the 180. but 'you can't go wrong with either' is true .Ammo , certainly the premium stuff, is all designed to meet the FBI criteria for penetration and expansion. A very nice round indeed !!!
