Back in the day, my first rifle was an H&R single shot, now owned by NEF. Mine was a 22 Hornet and it came with a 12ga barrel. My brother had one too, a 20ga, and his barrel would drop right on my receiver to make it a 20ga too.

Now I'm reading NEF's website, and they now have to fit the barrels to the receivers? Another FAQ said shotgun receivers will not take rifle barrels and vice-versa?

Did I read this wrong, or were my brother and my rifles/shotguns just "fitted" to each other (we both received them at the same Christmas 23 years ago, so maybe that's entirely possible)?

If I purchase a pair of Youth Handi-rifles and a regular Handi-rifle, will the rifle-calibered barrels interchange, or should they be fitted by the factory first? Another problem is I might want the full-size to be a shotgun.

What are my options here? Go with the NEF, or is there another type rifle/shotgun make I should be looking for?

I'm betting that it's a liability issue for them. They may want to see if your receiver is in good enough condition to have a barrel for a high pressure cartridge fitted. IIRC, their explanation of the interchangeability from rifle/shotgun was pretty thorough. Your other option is a T/C Encore or Contender in rifle configuration. It's a little more expensive;caliber changes run about $175-$225 depending on caliber and SS vs. blued.
