I got a Simmons 30mm red dot to try out on my Beretta Neos.

Unfortunately, the mount doesn't fit. The cross bolts don't line up with the slots in the scope rail. One of the bolts is adjustable, but it won't fit at either end of its adjustment.

Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to modify the mount?

I mounted a Tasco red dot on a Weaver (brand) rail. To do so properly, I had to file out an additional groove in the rail with a square file. I've noticed that many overseas manufactured red dots don't adhere to any mounting standards.

The rail on the Neos is integrated with the barrel. So I'll definitely be modifying the mount before I take a file to the rail.

After further consideration, I'm not sure I'll be keeping the simmons red dot anyway. I'm not sure I like the lumpy look of the dot. I know it's only a $35 sight, but it still bugs me.

I find some scopes with built-in bases have one of the screws flattened on one side. This allows you to put the flat side to the rail. I'll take a picture tonight, I would advise you to file away on the screw before filing on the mount.

Lucky, I agree that your idea is a good choice in certain cases. I chose to file on the $8 weaver base as it was aluminum rather than the harder steel screw simply to reduce labor. It appears factory after a little dab of Birchwood Aluminum Black.

In DJAteOhAte's case, it appears that his screws are already squared, and that the slots in the aluminum "mount" need to be lengthened to allow mounting on the Neos base.

FWIW, the Tasco PDP2 is an excellent sight and doesn't require any mods to mount directly to any weaver rail.
