I have been itching to build a 10/22 bench gun to go with my RAR Target. Well, it was Gun Show Day & I scored a deal on a 10/22 Sporter. The spec sheet is here: https://ruger.com/products/1022Sporter/specSheets/31166.html

I have an extra Nikon Rimfire scope at home, so all I really need are rings. With that said, I guess it’s time for me to start looking into triggers & stocks.

These are really cool guns, the barrel profile is about perfect. I just wish they put them in a walnut stock instead of birch. Tempted to get one and put it in a French walnut stock I have laying around.
You know, I just may have a walnut 10/22 stock around here …

Several years ago I put one together with a Clark 21.5" mid-weight barrel (~.720" at muzzle) and always thought it was the perfect contour. Not too light like the carbines and not too heavy like a bull barrel. These LVT's are pretty much the same contour and the threaded muzzle is a huge bonus. Need to have mine done.

I really like the looks of that gun as is! I like that barrel profile a lot!

I put a Volquartsen trigger kit and mag release in mine many years ago and really like them.

Recently added a Magpul stock and Faxon barrel and it’s a great shooter, but main driver behind my last upgrades was a threaded barrel for a suppressor. Since I wanted a threaded barrel, I figured I might as well get a target barrel, and then needed a stock it would fit.

If yours is a good shooter, I’d just upgrade the trigger and call it good. It’s a nice looking rifle!

@CraigC , I really like your rifle. @Spats McGee i think you made a wise choice. I had a 10/22 that looked like a M1Carbine. I had my son over last spring, left him in the gun room by himself. Said don’t come out without a 22 in your hands. And don’t touch the CZ if you know what’s good for you. He picked the 10/22. I now have a Stainless that I got to replace it. The 10/22 is a master of design options. Enjoy It Spats.

Thanks it's now in a walnut sporter with a Leupold instead of iron sights but I don't have any updated pics.

Weather being what it is, I dragged her out of the safe yesterday and gave her a good cleaning, including JB Bore paste. I’d heard good things about that stuff, but had never used it until yesterday. I also dug out my Nikon scope, and found some rings in the box. Unfortunately, I don’t think they will work for this project, so I ordered some Warne rings.

Now I just need weather to warm up so I can go shoot!

Better weather headed your way. We are finally thawing after a 2 week deep freeze. I have a CZ 457 American on the way, and will be looking for a suitable scope and mounts for that here shortly. May have to put a Yo Dave spring kit in it if it seems worth the effort. I do have a 10-22 with a few mods, and a Bergara BXR to wring out. I am looking forward to some range time too!

Looking forward to hear how it shoots. My 31166 came with a good trigger. I'm thinking about putting a Kidd drop in trigger kit in it.

They offered that rifle a few years ago as a limited run, but without the threaded barrel. I bought one and absolutely love it. I'm sure you will too. I did replace the stock and put one of the Ruger BX triggers in mine and it is way more accurate than any of the standard carbines.

IMO this is what the standard Ruger 10/22 should be. The overall size, weight and balance are perfect, and they aren't that much more expensive. Mine is heavy enough to shoot well off the bench and with a reasonable size scope on it is not too heavy for hunting. Mine is 7 lbs even with a Burris FF-II 3-9X40 scope on it.

I've been waiting for them to make another run to get a 2nd one. I found this instead. Basically, the same rifle, but with the BX trigger from the factory, Hogue stock and a carry strap. Since I would have replaced the trigger anyway this worked out cheaper. These are a little harder to find.

Update: Insomnia kind of stinks, but there’s no real bad time to mount a scope, right? So that’s what I did at 4 this morning. Anyway, for some reason, my order for Warne rings was cxl’d, so I ordered some from Vortex. The “low” model Hunter rings, to be exact. And as it turns out, they’re so low that I almost can’t get the scope cover on the front end of the scope. I suspect a little filing of the scope cover may fix that.

Perfect! I really think the LVT barrel profile with the sporter stock is the perfect sporting configuration. The standard barrels are too light but Goldilocks would love the LVT. ;)

I finally took an updated pic of mine. The Clark mid-weight barrel is pretty much identical to the LVT, about .730" at the muzzle. This one is a 21.5".
