kindling and assailants, felling small trees (like a christmas tree), pruning hardwoods and conifers, shaping wood for artistic and functional reasons, and other tasks I'm sure I've failed to mention.

Cherokee artists in this region use hatchets to shape wood masks.

I think a good knife is easier and safer to use for most of these tasks, and a saw works a whole lot easier for me than a hatchet at cutting down trees. I am not real artistic so can't comment on that. I generally use nippers or a pruning saw for pruning. I would make a big mess trying to do it with a hatchet.

But, everyone has their own ideas about these things.
