I picked one up today at Walmart. I went there to check out a 200 dollar Barnett and came home with a 300 dollar Bear.
But, it's faster and a better bow with a telescopic sight, not that 3 dot scope that's the same as my older recurve. Claimed velocity is 370 FPS on this one vs 230 claimed (200 actual measured) on my recurve. I really wanted an Excalibur recurve, but the compounds cost less and perform as good or better.
This thing is heavier than my recurve, but I knew that. It has a much better trigger, less creep and lighter. I don't worry so much about penetrating a pig with this one if I get a shot at one. It'll give me more range, too.
So I set up first at 20 yards to get an idea where it was shooting. That cheap archery target, foam, couldn't stop the bolt. I shot through it even at 40 yards! I was hitting the target, just not sure exactly where, but I think I'm close. I've got to get a better target that'll stop this thing. I don't have to worry too much about that with my old one except at 20 yards or in.
So, I had to stop for today. Good news, didn't lose any bolts. I was a little worried about that considering I had to mount the scope and you can't exactly bore sight a crossbow. It was pretty well on windage, but shooting way low. This scope has 4 elevation wires in it. I'm using the top for 20, 30, 40, and eventually I'll shoot it at 50. I also need to play with broad heads before I hunt with it, so bow season starts Saturday and I may be using my old recurve opening day, don't know, we'll see if I can get the new bow ready in time and get confident in it.
