NEW FN Hi Powers!!!

Doesn't look like 509 mags to me.

This seems more like an all new gun vs a traditional HP. Doesn't seem like much, if any, will be cross compatible.

The Springfield seems a lot closer to a traditional HP with alleged cross compatibility.

yup... looks like this new FN is basically its own thing. Really though... maybe it doesnt have to have cross compatability. They really should have just named it something like FN 9mm Classic. Its clearly aimed to the Boomer crowd with the High MSRP. I dont think this will be any sort of Game Changer in the industry. Just a nice classic throwback type pistol useing more modern features and manufacturing processes. Its too expensive for mass market appeal so it will most likely be a high end niche gun.

Its not the first time FN has done thins. The FN HP-DA was a similar attempt to modernize the Hi-power. Nice pistols that kind of bombed in the marketplace.

Kind of strange that FN is producing this and Springfield is making more of a traditional Hi-power. You would think it would be the other way around. Marketing is going to play a big role in this. FN is typically lousy at marketing to the commercial market so lets see what happens.

Looks great.... will I like one more than something like a nice Beretta.... probably not. In the end its a pretty and overpriced 9mm in a see of 9mms. They are about $500 too high for a pistol that strays away from a classic and loved design entering the market. $800 range would probably be more attractive to someone looking at Hi-powers and maybe want to try something with more modern features.

I emailed FN with a couple of questions:

1. Are there plans for the new FN High Power to be chambered in 40 S&W?
2. Are there plans for optics cut versions of the new High Power?

See if I hear back from them.

At 40 oz it's not anything I can carry as it'll hurt my lower back. That makes it a range gun for me, which I'm not sure I need at that price. Do we know if the magazines are proprietary or if it'll take the original magazines?

I can tell by looking at them they are not hipower mags. Different tube and looks like a different cut for the mag catch.

I wonder if the FN mutant has a frame cam bar like a real P35 or now runs off the slide stop like a CZ or such.
Pictures are not clear enough to tell. The publicity shot of one field stripped is not much help except that the barrel lug is different.

I guess I don’t really understand who this new HP is marketed towards.. For most people the HP is a classic, and probably want something as close to the original as possible. Then there’s the issue of optics, both younger and older shooters are into optics these days. It’s definitely interesting, but I’ll I’d still buy an SA-35 over this. Other companies that have brought back old models mostly kept them as original as possible - Python, SA-35. I dunno, FN is one of the few gunmakers that makes almost nothing that interests me. This is yet another example.

It looks like that beaver tail might be modular or is there another reason for it to be segmented like that?

It does, looking at some other pictures it seems that they are different in different pictures.

Gotta say that does kinda intrigue me.

Edit: looking at the website they do say there are changeable grip accessories, so may be.

Still listed at 40 oz though, maybe if/when they drop a aluminum or polymer lightweight option I’ll think about it again

You have to imagine a universe where the industry never went to poly striker glock inspired designs. Like I said ....its an early 90s throwback pistol. Kind of like the new CSX. There is a market there but I dont know if $1,300 combined with the FN brand is realistic. As good as FN is they dont really have a hard core following like Sig or HK. They are more like Steyr in terms of devoted followers.. FN is more about military contracts and I highly doubt this is aimed at that market. So its a strange approach to securing market share. Most likely it will fail unless the custom shops can hype it up enough and start tricking them out. Going to be tough but not impossible.

If someone like Sig dropped this nobody would care about $1,300 MSRP.

They might of tried offering two versions. The steel frame deluxe at $1,300 for the boomers and a polymer frame pistol in the $6-700 range. Similar to what Kahr or BRNO does. That would give the brand more exposure/recognition to the commercial market and not scare away a large bulk of consumers with the high MSRP.

I don't own FDE anything, yet, & that one is calling my name. Hopefully they'll be at the Outdoor Show in Harrisburg (aka Mini SHOT Show) next month & I'll get to fondle one.

most likely for different beavertails. good chance that backstrap is removable as well looking at the design (lines at bottom and also midway) Think 1911 but without a grip safety. Thats why I keep throwing the custom shops into the mix. It looks tailored for the Wilson combat types in the industry.

Springfield Armory has their new 'BP' listed at $699

If I am ever temped to own a 9mm, this could be it.
Indeed, all things considered the SA would be a more sensible purchase. But I really don't need it and the SA version just isn't that special.

Now if Smith would regurgitate their 3rd gen pistols...

THEY’RE BACK.

Currently choking back tears to know this iconic gun once again is going to be made by FN. This is excellent news!!

Wow. Guess the nabobs in Brussels took note that the Turks and Springfield were having luck selling their guns.
Where will these new "High Power" pistols be built, actually? The receiver on the ones shown on the website are stamped "FN Columbia, SC". That's a long way from Belgium, and Herstal, not Brussels, is where the nabobs live.

Now that's a HiPower I can get behind. Not the anti-2A Springfield Armory's version.
What is so "anti 2A" about SA's new version of the BHP?

Thankfully, I found one that suits me just fine, and don't have to worry about when these will happen or how much they'll cost.

The SA hate comes from their shenanigans involving an Illinois state law about gun store legislation https://gunstoday.com/why-is-everyone-boycotting-springfield-armory/

Rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, rightfully so

errrrrrrrrr You might want to research to see who actually built the BHP for all those years.

Thank you, but I don't need to do any research to ridicule FN's new gun.

I already knew FN developed the original GP35 and sold it under the Browning label as the BHP for decades.

After the BHP was discontinued, Springfield recently stepped in with a very faithful clone of the original BHP at 70% of the former gun's cost.

And now, FN comes back with a modified gun called the High Power that costs nearly twice as much as the Springfield.

I hope FN sells a ton of the new guns to help reduce demand -and prices- for real BHPs and the SA clones.

From their site

Built at the FN factory in Columbia, SC, state-of-the-art engineering, design and manufacturing refines the historic FN pistol into a modern arms masterpiece.

Mag tube is deffinitly mec-gar. Probably about the length of a Feg P9R as its 17rds instead of 18 like whats typical of the Beretta/sig mecgar tubes. Follower and follower ledge is different from that of a Hi-power.

If you look inside the magwell there are spacer tracks. Might indicate that there is a 40 or even 45 version in the works with a wider magwell sans those spacer tracks giving way to a wider magazine.

Lots of neat little details on these pistols. FN might be going after the semi custom build 1911 market.

Kind of suprised they went with what looks like is a poly base plate on such a high end pistol.

Doubtful anything is compatable with traditional Hi-powers. Its a different pistol all around.

The inanimate object is not anti-2A just the company.

Yup, they are in the penalty box for me. Just like S&W and Ruger of old. They need to pay for their shenanigans, just as the others had to, to get back in my good graces.

A company will use anything to sell more product, a venerable name is a valuable commodity.

Notice that Ford has dug the Maverick name out and applied it to a truck.

I might be interested in a HP, the "new HP", not so much.

I suppose I'm part of the target audience for these: I've owned 5-6 BHP's of various stripes, and built a couple from Israeli rebuilds even.

I'm currently down to one Practical, because I've decided any carry gun has to be drop safe, and because no matter what I did (relieving hammers, bobbing and adjusting) the damned things just bite me. When I competed and practiced with one I was shooting some 500 rounds per week, and have a permanent scar on my right thumb's web from it. Not all that fun now that I'm old and a sissy.

This *should* answer all my issues with the BHP, but....I don't know. Is it still a BHP? All I ever wanted was a beavertail, added grip and a bigger safety. The changes here make it seem more like a modern SIG or FN, which is the point, I suppose.
