I got a new Gen 4 G17 with the plastic sights. I was wondering what mods I should do. It will mostly be a range gun, but could pull double duty as HD sometimes. Night sights are a must. I am looking at the TRU-GLO Fiber-Optic Tritium sights and the basic meprolights. I have the Meprolights on my Kimber and like them, but the fiber optic sounds interesting for daytime shooting. Anyone use these? Also what kind of trigger mods? I was thinking of just the 25 cent job I saw on Youtube.

good sights.

I have a Tru-Glo fiber optic/tritium front sight on my Sig, I can't imagine having anything else. It really stands out even in the low light of an indoor range, and at night it's like having three green flashlights on the back of your gun. I would get the sights, but never would I change the internals on any combat proven gun like your Glock. Glocks work and work well, if you ever want to carry it for defense don't mod the internals other than light polishing of the trigger mechanism.

Well it sounds like I was on the right track. I live near the Glockmeister and all their mods are tempting, but seem like overkill. My brother bought a new 17 and then went and had $250 in mods done. They had him put the 3.5lb trigger in his carry gun. C'mon man.

Buy lots of ammo and some holsters. And a Glock 19. And then some more ammo. And a Glock 26. O wait, now you're gonna need more ammo...

I use a 4.5# (nominal 3.5#) connector in both of my EDC Glocks - Nothing wrong with that. 8 years carrying (almost) everyday and one very tense altercation. Depending upon how the springs are set up, a 4.5# connector may, or may not, produce a trigger pull of less than 4#'s.

I just got a brand new Glock. Mine is a third generation. First thing I did was to install heavier trigger and firing pin springs. Second thing I did was to add a 4.5# connector. The rest of the modifications I won't get into because most of them aren't applicable to a fourth generation Glock.

The sights were upgraded to Meprolight, 'night sights'. I thought about going with TFO sights; but, I finally decided that TFO sights are too fragile for EDC. At the range they're OK, but not on my belt. What one thing do I think you should do? Give your new Glock a really good, '25 cent' polish job.

Sell it is Glock. Combat proven by who? Get a FNH, Sig, or H&K.

Seriously before you modify or change sights learn to shoot it well then modify. I give the same advice to my students at track days. I tell them until you are as fast as you car spend the money on track days. When you are as fast then suspension and brakes. Never fails next time I see them on track they have dumped serious money into their ride and are 60% of the time slower.

Glock Doctor - Good point on the durability issue. I do plan on taking a few battle pistol courses with the 17 and that may be an issue out here in az. I think the Meprolights might be the way to go. It helps that I am already used to them as well. I will start with those and the 25 cent job and see where that takes me. I have 500 rounds to play with, time to have some fun.

Change the sights right away if you want. Many of us, myself included, hate the factory "U" notch. I blacked mine out with a sharpy because for whatever reason, that "u" caused the shooter to not focus where he should...the front sight. Problem with the sight? No, it's the shooter...but many shooters feel as I do.

Absolutely shoot it before you modify anything else to see if you actually want something different with the trigger. I have a 3.5" connector on my 19. I haven't put it on a trigger pull scale, but I know it doesn't break at 3.5lbs. I have a 1911 with a trigger job that I know breaks at 3.5lbs on a scale, and my glock with the 3.5lb bar feels more like 5lbs to me.

I agree. I did the same. I also went ahead and disassembled to the point there was nothing left to disassemble. No special tools needed, just a paper clip I had handy and a screwdriver. That's when I realized what all the fuss was about regarding simplicity.

I do. The Glock factory sights are almost identical to Meprolights; perhaps because the tritium vials are the same. I, also, agree on buying the new sights right away. Why? Because you're going to be doing a lot of practicing; and what you get used to looking at could make a difference. As long as I can get Meprolights at our local gunshop, I wouldn't go with Glock Factory sights.

Night sights are nice to have but are not absolutely necessary. Nothing else is needed, at least before you've even shot it. :D The abovementioned night sights, plus an extended takedown tab (easier to grasp while still remaining below the frame cutouts) and accompanying upgraded retention spring, are the only things I've done to my personal "third generation" Glock 19.

Night sights, good holster, and ammo.

I'd save the the 25 cents for the trigger job...it is a waste of time. Fun to tinker and get to know your gun though.

I run a 3.5 pound connector in my Gen 3. 20,000 rounds later it gives a consistent 5.5 pound trigger pull. My group size halved compared to what I achieved with the stock 5.5 pound connector.
I also changed the sights for Heinie Straight Eight night sights, these are the dot on dot style. MY group size halved again.
I went on to beat the reining national IPSC Production Division champion with that gun and qualified for the Australian IPSC team, so to me it's still the perfect set up. :)

How do you like the plain back compared to a 2 dot back. I've never shot with a sight like the 10-8

I prefer it very much! Either is great. I have a couple of 1911's with plain black rears, and I just prefer it that way. It really helps you focus on that front sight.

I forgot about straight 8's I will have to check those out. Anyone else have experience with them? I think I will wait on any trigger work till later. As a heads up, Glock will now just send a new spring to you for the gen 4 with no questions asked.

1stmarine, I'm fully satisfied with my big dots.

If I had to buy new night sights all over, I would go with 10-8's or heinie straight 8's.
