its that time of year (week) again and I'm itching for a new gun. Not sure why as I have one rifle I haven't shot and 2 ar15 receivers to start putting together. I just want something different, or maybe a couple cheaper somethings. I don't have the cash to swing a new gun, and looking at my safe I oddly am looking at my 686-6 and wondering what kind of magic I could pull with a trade. I would mainly be looking at rifles I think this time although I could easily go for older blued revolvers. So what say you my THR brethren, what should I be doing? 686-6 is nice enough and built like a tank but I just haven't fallen in love with it. I still miss the Taurus 66 I had as a teenager. And why am I so enamored with the thought of a 03a3...I know it would be a junker if I was able to trade into it.

As long as it is cheap to shoot or affordable to load for I would to just have a gun that's new to me. I enjoy a new gun just like I do the first hunt in the fall or fishing when the bream first get on the bead. If an 03 a3... is what you can find and afford I say go for it,be safe and have fun.

A no lock 686 and a shooter grade 03A3 might be closer in price than you think. Check out Gunbroker completed auctions

Just checking the format

You need to go to your local pawn shop, LGS, or gun show. Just see what they have that you like. I think it would be tough to make a gun purchase these days that will go down in value

I feel your need my friend.

I always put back a certain amount of money every month for property taxes,,,
When my taxes went down a couple of years back,,,
I never adjusted the amount I stashed away.

Now come tax time I use the left-over (and anything I've saved) to get a new treat for myself.

I should be getting my tax bill in a few weeks,,,
I've already started the decision process.

I like pairing a rifle and a handgun together,,,
This time I am considering a handgun to pair with my CZ 452 Military Trainer.

Since it's a bolt action that reminds me of a Safari rifle,,,
I'm considering a revolver like Allan Quartermain would have carried.

When Stewart Granger played him in King Solomon's Mines,,,
The handgun he carried was a Colt SAA.

So, I'm leaning towards a brand spanking new Ruger Single-Six,,,
If this is the route I go it will definitely have target sights,,,
But I'm waffling on whether a 5.5" or 6.5" barrel.

As for your choice,,,
Get something that will make you smile.

I'm partial to K-frame Smith & Wesson revolvers myself,,,
But one of the older Rugers like the Security Six might fill the bill for you.

Happy hunting,,,

If you find a cure, please let us know as I am sure that there are a LOT of us here (moi aussi) with that affliction.

Discipline yourself.

Go shoot the virgin rifle you already have.

And finish those two AR lowers.

Then, see if you still want a new gun. Or maybe you could give that money to your church to deal with things of a longer-term nature.

I know I wouldn't trade my 686 for anything out there, no matter how tempting a new gun might seem.

I would keep that 686-6 as close as the Godfather kept his enemies, breathe deeply, and do absolutely nothing, as advised by the late, great Calvin Coolidge. :D
