I picked up a sweet, vintage Sako m98 in 300H&H and am hoping to start reloading for it.

Anyone have any favorite loads? I might also be interested in picking up some components if you have some dusty old brass laying around.

Thanks, looking forward to learning a lot here.

Thanks POHammer, looks like you’re a Navy man too... I was on the Gridley CG21, back in the day.

The 165gr Gamekings are good bullets. I loaded some for a friend who bought a pre-64. I loaded it with 4350. I believe we got the best groups at 68gr. He sold the rifle and all the components without telling me. Jerk. It was a very nice rifle.

Yeap the Pre 64 Win was a classic but never could afford one!
The Rem 721 wasn’t to shabby either. That’s the one I shoot.
I’d really love a HH or Griffin & Howe, but alas that will never happen!!!

Been reloading for about 5 years now most of my loads are right out of the pre 1970 reloading manuals the newer books are reduced... What components are available to you? bullet weight brass powder and primer?

When I got my 300 about a dozen years ago it was during one of those periods that 300H&H brass was nonexistent but for extremely expensive factory ammo. It's a specialty cartridge any more so availability seems to be cyclic. Ended up up smashing some Nosler brand 300 Weatherby brass into the H&H brass I needed. Nice stuff that Nosler brass. So morale of the story, lay in a supply of the brass when you find it.

Welcome in. I rather like 'older' cartridges but a severe rejection reaction to belted cases. However, the .300 Holland & Holland is a classic.

I know nothing specifically about reloading the cartridge but will remind you of the fellow discussing shooting .45-70 Govt in a full pressure action.
"Work up a load until your fillings start to loosen. Then back off a half a grain to a grain."

Welcome... I dont load that cartridge but you have already found that brass is the key to old cool guns... Dixie gun works used to be a place to find odd things might be worth a look.

The 300 Weatherby brass I mentioned is $56 for 50 by Hornady. The Nosler brand is $110!

If you get stuck hunting for brass and can't find any, shoot me a pm and I'll dig some out for you...

You do realize that the H&H is the only cartridge that actually needs the belt all the other companies just added a belt for looks the H&H needs the belt to headspace the round.

There are a lot of cartridges out there with useless belts, but belts aren't always superfluous.
.458 Win Mag and .450 Marlin need a belt even more than the .375 or .300 H&H.

Thanks, I have a box or two of vintage ammo and a fee pieces of brass... I actually do have some 375H&H brass that I might have to turn turn into 300h&h brass...

I should say, when reforming brass it is best to start with unfired, virgin brass or anneal it prior to smashing for best results.

I should have posted a pic of the rifle... I got a sweet deal on it last year from a local dealer...

I paid $10 to the Sako Club guys to find out the details.... here’s what they had to say...

“Sako-Mauser serial number 1052xx is in caliber .300 Magnum (.300 H&H) and was booked for shipping to Firearms International (Washington, D. C.) on 23 February 1954. It was part of shipping lot 11104. A total of 90 similar Sako-Mausers in that same caliber were booked for shipping to Firearms International on that date.”
