Hi, I'm new to the forum. I've been reading for a while now, but only just registered today.

Great forum, btw. I was raised in a democratic household, and when I was little I was against guns, however, I was assigned a report on gun control in 7th grade, and that really opened my eyes. Later I became interested in knives and am now a real knut. Browsing the knife forums alot brought me, inexorably, here. :)

I'm looking for the Supreme Court case everyone keeps talking about. Some decision saying that it's not the police's job to protect you. If anyone has a link to more on that one it would be great.

Also, anyone play Unreal Tournament 2004?

(If legal and political isn't the right place, someone please move this post)

Sharp legal minds? Darn it, can ratty old tilecrawlers play anywho?

Hi, Dagger, welcome to THR. Resident tilecrawler checking in with your answer. Some of the most noted federal cases are:

DeShaney v. Winnebago Co. Dept. of Social Serv., 489 U.S. 189, 195 (1988) (state under no duty to protect its citizens)

Bowers v. DeVito, 686 F.2d 616, 618 (7th Cir. 1982) ("there is no constitutional right to be protected by the state against being murdered by criminals or madmen.")

Warren v. District of Columbia, 444 A.2d 1, 3 (D.C. 1981) ("fundamental principle of American law that a government and its agents are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any individual citizen.")

There are some great state cases as well but you said "Supreme Court" so I assumed federal.

Sing out if you need anything else. My fee is leads on new sushi bars, gun schools, and tall redheads with nice legs who are into a yuppie weasel who is into Japanese food and shooting schools.:D

Welcome aboard, Dagger!

Warren v. District of Columbia, as mentioned.

Riss v. City of New York

Lynch v. North Carolina Dept. of Justice

A few more cases for you to pore over.

That's good to hear that you didn't come across a bunch of propaganda filled with half-truths and outright lies. Same thing basically happened to me with nuclear energy--I did a school report on it and turned from mildly anti-nuclear to the extremely pro-nuclear person I am today.

South v. Maryland: Courts have repeatedly held that police have no duty to protect any individual, but only a general duty to protect society, and cannot be held personally liable for failure to protect an individual. - Supreme Court 1855
