Need some help from all you fellow varmint shooters. I retired 12/31/12 so this is the beginning of my second year of retirement. I live in NE Kansas and we had rough winter, so my wife and I hid out in Florida for all of February. While it was OK, Florida is not my cup of tea. Took no guns so I felt naked. I really missed varmint hunting and winter small game, rabbits and squirrels. So, next winter we plan to look for some place around Albuquerque or maybe a bit further south or west. So this is the beginning of my search for hunting opportunities within say 100-200 miles of Albuquerque. I love coyote calling and am told that New Mexico has lots of coyotes. Are there any prairie dogs to shoot? Where? My plan is to rent a place for maybe 2 months, January and February. Once settled in, I can begin traveling around the area. I will REALLY APPRECIATE any guidance you can offer. Responses can be offered here or PMs are also welcome.

I haven't done it yet, but hear you can set up about anywhere here in NM and bring in coyotes.

A long way from Albuquerque, but I'm hunting with this guy for 2 days next month.

Right in the SE corner of MN. By brother in law booked a hunt with him last year and had a good time. Talked me into going with him this year. We are going to do the guided hunt for 2 days and hunt on our own on some public land for 2 more.

I hunt and have lived in New Mexico off and on for the last 45 years. From Albuquerque, where I was born, to the SW part of the state. So where does that take us? I find the S.W. area, Alamogordo and Tularosa two of my most favorite parts of the state. I often hunt this part of the state for couse and mule deer, as well as the great turkey hunting in the spring. And although the gun laws aren't as free wheeling as in my current state of Arizona, they are still pretty good, and do allow you to carry open without a permit, in most circumstances.

Alamogordo and Tuli both have huge unrestricted public lands where you can varmint hunt any time of the year. And there are lots of coyotes, fox, and prairie dogs to play with. I find the Northern part of the state too populated for my taste, Albuquerque has evolved into a really big nasty city. Lots of crime, and there are just too many other hunters for my comfort.

Alamogordo's population is about 30K, Tularosa about 3K, and about 12 miles from Alamo..Alamo has modern shopping malls and just about everything a big city has, but a much slower pace. Elevation is about 3,000' and if you want ponderosa pines at 9,000' elevation, that's only 25 miles away.

Then of course there is Tucson, which is only 325 miles west of Alamogordo. We have massive public lands, lots of varmints, and you don't need a permit to carry concealed or open. There are lots of rentals that are outside the city too, where you can varmint hunt just minutes from your casa. The weather is beautiful in the winter.

How does AZ have better gun laws than NM? In NM you can even open carry in the state capital.

For a big, nasty city see Phoenix.
