Last month I bought a Spyderco Manix from member WJR. After we conversed through PM a few times, he mentioned he was saving for another knife, and might be selling some other Spydercos. I ended up also buying 2 Caly, Jrs, one in the standard VG-10, and the other a ZDP-189 version.

The Spyderco Manix was something of a cult favorite. It had a reputation for being incredibly tough, but was also too large and heavy for most people to use it for EDC. The Caly, JR is another cult favorite. It's known for being extremely light and slicing exceptionally well.

The Manix was discontinued because it was just too much knife for most people. It eventually came back in a smaller, lighter form as the Manix 2. The Manix 2 is about half an inch shorter than the Manix was, and Spyderco has done a good job of managing to sell them at an attractive price point. Many custom runs of the Manix 2 have been made, and it was eventually made in lightweight FRCP versions and in a larger version, the Manix 2 XL.

How does the Manix 2 XL compare to the original Manix? If you look at the photos, the most obvious difference is that 4-way clip on the original, and the back lock. The outlines of the two are almost identical, but the 2 XL is significantly lighter. The Manix definitely locks up sturdily, but I prefer the Caged Ball Bearing Lock on the 2 XL.

So far, I prefer the 2 XL, but the Manix is definitely a tank. I can both see why it was discontinued, and also understand why some people loved it.

I sold off a Manix when I got my CHL; just ended up being too much to edc but it was a GREAT knife.

I'd be interested to see how the ZDP does on a daily basis. I was planning on a Ladybug in VG10 but they also have them in ZDP too. So far I haven't come across anyone actually using ZDP in an edc roll though.

Bought a ZDP Dragonfly for my fiance while she was deployed, but haven't used one for any length of time myself yet. I'll report back if and after I've had a chance to give it meaningful use.

The new XL has milled liners right?

I got mine with full, it is really heavy, but I like that

Yeah, the updated 2 XL has skeletonized liners, and is a bit lighter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ZDP Dragonfly has a solid ZDP-189 only blade, while the Calypso Jr that's pictured appears to have a ZDP-189 core laminated into 420J2 (or similar softer steel). If so, that follows the pattern of the current ZDP-189 blade Caly 3 and Caly 3.5 where the 420J2 increases durability by providing impact resistance to the harder and more brittle XDP-189.

DNS, I'm pretty sure that the ZDP versions of the Dragonfly, Stretch, Delica, and Endura use a plain chunk of ZDP-189. In fact, that Calypso Jr is the first molded plastic handle Spyderco I've seen that appears to have the laminated rather than plain ZDP-189 blade. But I'm not the Spyderco expert that JS is.

Sorry, didn't have enough connection to reply earlier- the Caly Jr is indeed a 420/ZDP laminate.

I bought the other knife member WJR was selling, a Mini Manix. A little smaller, but still built like a tank, with a very smooth action. Great knife, but to be honest, I still find it too large and heavy for EDC.

I think the Manix2 was made to replace it.

I almost bought a Manix 2 XL for EDC, but I prefer tip down carry. Went with the Spyderco Military instead.
