New Reloaders and Lack of Supplies

I refuse to pay these inflated prices. I bought a lot of supplies when the tide was low so to speak.

I picked up a sleeve of 5,000 large rifle primers for $125 and got 5 maybe 6,000 small rifle primers and two complete RCBS Rockchucker presses & everything else in double thrown in a deal with the purchase of several rifles.

If I had to pay 4, 5, 6 times for the stuff to reload I would not go shooting at all until this stuff blows over.

I will not burn through my stock pile, with this new administration we might need all the ammo we can make.

I am remodeling my shed. I will be insulating it, I will.be installing two in the wall electric heaters, i will be frameing in a hole to install a air conditioner and build a nice big reloading bench and have room to load in style out of the house.
I gave my 2nd sone two RCBS Rockchucker presses, a RCBS Rockchucker 11 press, a trimmer, powder measurer, scales, dial calibers, eight dies sets for all of his calipers, four reloading manuals and a bunch of other reloading stuff I bought at decent prices.
I bought another Rockchucker press about a month ago for $75 and just bought another gor $80 & $20 shipping plust I should have another one or two in my collection of used reloading stuff.

I spend all of my extra cash on reloading stuff if I find it at fair prices.

I also trade range brass for reloading stuff. Recently I got 8 pounds of IMR4198, two one pound containers of either red dot or blue dot powder, a almost new set of RCBS 45acp dies and some other items.

Good things come to those who wait.

I’m good on components for hunting and have a decent supply of 9mm
I’m lookin for SRP for an Ar and 55 grain bullets. I’ve happened on to a few along the way.
I have friends that know what I need and I know what they want. If any of us venture out we call each other so see what’s needed.
Been very fortunate getting through this and I’m not shooting much so my stock pile is actually slowly growing.
I will not pay inflated prices. good post

I am 40 miles north of Seattle, there is a Cabelas semi-close by that has not had anything in the reloading section, rifle/pistol ammo section, and shotgun shell section for months on end.
Where the shotgun shells go on the shelves they have hundreds of boxes of clay pigeons and clay pigeons in the wide isle between sections.

What good is a clay pigeon with out shotgun shells to shoot them.
That’s my go to Cabelas! they had stuff up till November-ish. random powder, shotgun primer... but yes, now it’s bare

My local (80 miles away) Cabelas is bare also. Has been for quite some time, even on factory loaded ammo. Guy working the gun counter said they are being told that they are 7-9 months out in getting stuff in as far as reloading supplies goes. A few of the mom and pop shops have some components, but most of the stuff is gone also.

the South Carolina Cabelas has stuff, and a local gun shop
in Charlotte had plenty of powder and few primers

55gr bullets... bought some buy-it-now on Gunbroker Tuesday. Search for “.224 bullets” then filter to buy it now only, sort price low to high. 17 per hundred for quality bullets and shipping is reasonable.

Yes, I have another hobby: Wood turning. I just haven't had the opportunity to get set up again after the move a year and a half ago.
If the Great Ammo Panic of 2020 doesn't ease up before I run out of components, I will have no excuse for not getting one of my lathes running!
my other hobby is tiles! I bought a wet saw and tile was on sale at Lowes and I’m tiling everything in my house

Will do. I’m looking for a few sets of dies and some bullets. I’m not seeking powder or primers right now unless it’s local
Also check out Little Hardware in DT Charlotte, they had the most reloading supplies know to man... you have to ask to see the reloading room

Hey all, I, like many of you jumped into reloading about a year too late. About a week or so before Christmas, I found a press, dies, and a little (emphasis on LITTLE) bit of supplies starting out. I have to travel about 60 miles to the closest place that carries reloading supplies, and online is a wash unless you want to spend a small fortune. In the last month, I’ve been able to accumulate 5 lbs of powder and a bunch of primers just from trading buddies. Point is, if you’re new like me, branch out and talk to friends and acquaintances and see if they are willing to trade for supplies/components. It doesn’t even have to be components for components. If you have a certain skill set, maybe you can trade work for supplies. It’s not a totally hopeless situation, and I realize that my situation may be a bit different here in Wyoming, where almost everyone you come across reloads or knows someone that does. My advice to you is don’t give up, and be patient! Think outside the box! You never know when you may have something land in your lap when it all seems hopeless that you’ll never find primers or powder (or bullets). While working this week, I did a service call at an older gentleman’s house, and I saw he had a ton of reloading stuff set up on a bench. Turns out he isn’t in the “shooting shape” as he put it, and his focus is now on stone jewelry. Traded him some raw agate and a few other stones I had in my garage in a box for a bunch of primers and powder. When I left, it was hard to tell who was happier with the deal. Dont give up!!!!
Great post and truer words never wrote. I’ve been trading loaded box ammo for components with folks. I got lots of something they lack and vice versa we swap a little bit. We’re a community. That’s our strength

Don’t pay these prices! even if the gunshop is getting it at super high prices from their distributors. Just Don’t buy $200, $100,$75.... primers, let them sit on it. this is ridiculous. Everyone find another hobby... learn to bake a cake or something.
I can sew, bake, paint and turn wrenches already. Growing up in the country does that. :). Don’t need a new hobby. I need more time and money for the hobbies I have.

Ha! I’ve got a brother that lives about 50 miles from there, hopefully he can help me out and go look around and find something
Don’t get me wrong. There was a time when I’d hop on a bike and ride up to Ithaca just for some white hots. But that’s a lot of miles ago and I’m just too old and lazy for that now. Saw the post about the brother and figured you might be going for a visit. Sounds like you already drive quite a bit. :)

I drove from here in Wyoming to Orlando 2 summers ago....with all 4 kids and the wife. Never again.....never again.
in a RV? a School bus? a huge Land Yacht?

I did RV 36’er from Seattle to Yellowstone last year and HELL NO will I ever do that again

None of the above - A Toyota Sequoia! Plus picked up my father in law in Arkansas along the way. Honestly it wasn’t too bad, except for driving from Orlando to Clearwater beach and back

what happened? a gator bit one of the kids?

If you’ve never driven down there, it’s about 108 miles between Orlando and Clearwater Beach. Using my “Wyoming drive time math”, I figured with traffic, should be there in hour and 45, maybe 2 hrs.....4 hours later we got there. I can cover 108 miles up here in Wyoming in about an hour and a half and pass maybe 5 cars and a hundreds of antelope. Never seen traffic that bad, and don’t plan on seeing it again!

Yup. My daily commute is only 35 miles. Takes over an hour to get to work on a slow day. Longer to get home cause I can’t stay late enough to avoid the traffic. And I’m not in a big city.
