New Reloaders and Lack of Supplies

I have to agree. Wish I would have stocked up more when Cabela's was selling S&B primers for $19/1000. I got plenty back then, but agree I'm not paying ridiculous money for supplies. They eventually come back down in price unless they outlaw everything all together.
As to original topic, talk to all your friends to keep their brass for you. I have numerous folks that bring me ziplocks or boxes of their once fired brass. And don't forget that there are still folks that have reloading stuff they don't use that might let it go cheap or free. In the last year picked up a friend's entire setup for free. He was glad to see it go to someone who would appreciate it and use it. His kids had no interest. I offered to load for him as payment. He still ends up "tipping" me for the effort.

I almost think that there should be a section in every reloading manual that touches on supplies and shortages in the past. Not everyone searches forums or is on the internet much, and if they buy a press kit to start up and are oblivious to the past shortages, maybe it would give them a heads up to start spending wisely in times of plenty and have enough stock on their reloading shelves to survive a months/years long shortage of what they normally reload. If more people are prepared during the next inevitable shortage, then maybe the price gougers will be sitting on their stockpiles with nobody paying their ridiculous asking prices. I’m taking my experience as a lesson learned for next time and hopefully I’ll be more prepared next time.

I just can’t believe people would pay these prices. Even if you’re a millionaire, out of sheer principle you should not pay these prices. I’m going the shoot what I have, keep enough ammo for 1 fire fight, and if this sport or hobby becomes too expensive, so be it, I’ll learn to use a airgun.

Exactly - the sheer principle of the matter is what gets me. I understand the whole supply and demand, but some of it is getting ridiculous. Having grown up in the 80’s and 90’s, this is starting to remind me of generators right before Y2K!

This is a great time to be a reloader but its a tough time to get into it. If that makes sense. It warms my heart, in these times, to hear about you guys helping other shooters and reloaders out with free or cheap components. Back during 2020 I gave away a few packages of toilet paper, a few thousand primers, a few pounds of powder, a few AR mags, a few boxes of ammo and a few boxes of bullets. I'm sure those guys would have done the same if things were reversed. At least I can hope!

May 2021 be better!!!

history repeating itself. Primers and Ammo is the new Tulipmania. don’t fall for the speculation, the bubble will burst

That's exactly the problem. I haven't overpaid for a single thing since all this started. The opportunists are only successful when people buy what they're selling. People need to STOP freaking buying stuff at asinine prices. Let them choke on their stock. I get there's panic and millions of new gun owners (how many of them are Democrats, go figure), and many are expecting an all out civil war (won't happen) or that ammo and reloading components will suddenly cease to exist (also won't happen), but just relax and take a deep breath. It'll be awhile, but things will settle down. People have got to run out of money sooner or later.

A few years back when Washington State wanted to ban high capacity magazines people were spending an outrages amount for high capicity mags.
A friend bought a cace of 100 round double drum Ar magazines for $119 each mag.
When the mag panic came about he took them to the Puallup Wa gun show and sold them all for $300 a piece.
People do strange things in times of need.
At the last gun show I went to guys were paying $275 a thousand for large rifle primers and $325 a thousand for small rifle primers.

It,s a free country and people can mostly do as thet please.
I'm pretty frugal with my hard earned cash.

people will panic over anything and people will gouge over anything

Money makes the world go around, some spend it wisely, some spend it foolishly.
Nobody is twisting any bodies arm. People make thier own choices, me I wait things out.
yeah! you should join the Fish and Game club in Renton. Lots of like minded people to talk to. It’s like a country club without the boze and golf

I think the Guntubers are working with the resellers to hype the market up.

Not quite. Tulipmania stemmed from a surplus in commodities within a populace experiencing a social wealth boom. The US is experiencing a self-inflicted scarcity of both manufactured goods and individual real wealth.
By the way, the presenter was wrong. What the Dutch experienced was not “capitalism” - that word didn’t even come into being until Karl Marx used it in his 1870’s articles describing free markets and rugged individualism - what they experienced was a glut. Too much prosperity in too few hands with no transfer mechanism other than to create a market. Basic Econ 101. :)

I don’t qualify for any government hand-out... but I qualify for government hand-in. Lucky me
If you didn’t get a COVID stimulus check it means you make over $400K/yr individual or $800K/yr family income. IIRC that was the point: every taxpayer got a check or a deduction and some got both
