I was in Wal Mart tonight (felt like I was in a Thrid World country compared to my usual shopping haunts) and saw shotgun ammo from Remington marked Nitro 27 Premier Handicap. Loaded with HDCP as the "drams equivalent" rating. Shot was offered in 7.5, 8, or 9 sizes.

They also had the other Premier Trap load that I've seen before.

What is this Nitro 27 stuff? Have I just not seen it before? Is it a good dove and quail load? I've read that target loads have harder shot and also kick less, and make good hunting loads. What does HDCP mean compared to the regular dram ratings?

???

Thanks,

This load has been around for two or three years now. The HDCP means handicap, for trap shooters. It's a very good shell for the ones that get out there and your shooting from the 27 yard line. They have a bit of recoil though. The shells are metallic gold and reload great. I'll usually slip a few in my pouch if I'm shooting games for purse on a trap line.

These would be great for long range doves, but a bit overkill if they are near at all. I believe they run 1270fps. There are also the sporting clay load that is even better at 1300fps.

Nitros are possibly the best longer range target load currently available. They pattern very tight. They do kick some in lighter shotguns, 1 1/8 oz at 1250 plus will. The case reloads like an STS, IOW, very well.

Needless to say, they're not cheap.

Thanks. I guess I just hadn't seen it before. Sounds like it may be worth picking up a couple of boxes.

I think the boxes say their other trap/target load has a velocity of just 1150 FPS. I suspect it would be better for closer shots, and pattern better than the promotional dove loads.

That heavier load might also reach up into trees after squirrels, but I want heavier shot for that than they probably load in this Nitro 27 stuff...

P.S. Do they make Nitro 27 in 20 ga.? I saw only 12 ga., but also have a 20.

Nope. Trap competition is for 12ga. I have never seen them make a 20ga that was designed for trap competition, they make some higher velocity loads in some game loads, but I doubt if there is hard shot involved with it. Nothing that a reloader can't fix.
