im considering putting up the cash to buy a new rifle...im looking for a pretty accurate 308. im torn between moving away from a bolt platform, remington 700 in particular, to the possibility of an ar-10 platform. this will mainly be a range/target gun, but might make its way to the woods on a rare occasion, so im a bit worried about carrying my "black rifle" on a potential hunting trip, even though i probably shouldnt be as much as i am. i have looked at panther (dpms) and some armalites, and im doing my best to spend under 1200 on the rifle itself. the bolt gun competition comes from the remington 700 ltr (light tactical rifle) and 700 police series rifles, also in 308. these run in the 750-1000 range usually. as far as rifle weight goes, anything under 10lbs will be more or less fine. im not looking for a mountain rifle or carbine type deal, so weight isnt a huge concern, but anything thats not light to the point of bouncing the gun off its bipod or making it a pain to regain proper sight picture is definitely a plus. anybody have any input? i like the modularity of the ar platform a little bit more, as well as the pistol grip and the seemingly endless modifications i can do to it. i know the 700s are readily modified as well, but i think the ar mods top those of the 700, and its handling characteristics would likely allow me to use it for more applications. this would be my first trip into "ar" territory, so any help regarding which is a better pick, and any help regarding other ar type rifles i should look at would be extremely helpful. thanks in advance guys!

ARs can definetely fit into the "pretty accurate" category. If I've understood what you're after, you seem to "wanting "a bolt rifle for several reasons:
1 You have a better chance of more accuracy per $ with bolt.
2 bolts are quicker/easier/more silent to go from "absolute safe to ready to go"
3 Bolts are more "socially acceptable". I don't care, but you seem to...If it's legal and you want it, get it!!!
I've shot 700s & ARs in .308,and my opinion is..Get either,better yet,get both!

My friend who served as a warrant officer in the navy suggested not getting an AR10 style of platform specifically cause they are finicky infact he said the SEAL units that have AR10 or SR25's leave'em on the racks and use m1a platforms for what you are describing.

You can get some serious accuracy out of the m1a but you will definetely pay for it, if you don't want to pay as much for it you need to look at the remmy 700 or savage 10

If you're worried about the "black rifle look" maybe you could find some wood furniture for it.(Like the Cowboy assault rifle, just backwards.) Not sure if there is any though.

I have a Bushmaster BAR-10, and it's hands down my favorite rifle in my safe. It's incredibly more accurate than I am...

And it's just friggin' COOL. Definately one of those rifles other people will stop and ask you about at the range.

choice

I have an AR-10 that allowed me to put twenty rounds in a hole the size of a quarter.
Its the most accurate gas gun I have ever seen.

Allright, I thought I should bring this thing back to point out that it doesn't have to look tacticool or like an evil black rifle, if you paint it right.
