New S&W Heavy Duty

Add adjustable sights to a .357 N-frame (M27) and you’re close to the ideal revolver.
I purchased this HP M28 for 800 bucks. I had to clean it up, but oh baby, she's a great .357. If I'm going sans sights on an N frame, give me a 1917.

A true repro of a HD would be 38 Spl. not .357. Or maybe I missed something.

When the HD was issued for the hotter .38 Specials, S&W had no "middle" frame size such as the
L-frame today. So S&W used its N-frame to be sure to handle the newer cartridge. At the same
time, Colt reminded its buyers that the Official Police had proven to be able to handle the new
round. The Official Police frame was that "middle" size which later was used for the .357.

Back in those days, Colt provided a simply more handy revolver than S&W with its N-frame and
could continue to dominate the police market. Many such as myself always have found the
N-frame just a bit too big to handle efficiently.

While it is missing the 4th screw it has the upper sideplate screw and no safety lock. So it is a 95% repro.
I note the Heavy Duty and Outdoorsman have a cachet to them, remained in production long after the .357 was introduced.

Great guns but from a practical standpoint the 586/686
fills the role of a heavy duty revolver just as well if not
better because of its more friendly user size.

Over time I owned a few of the HDs but they never fit
my hand all that well which is a common complaint
by me with any N-frame. S&W was extremely wise
in having several K-frame dimensions on its L-frame.

The L frame, had several, even carried a 4” on duty. Way to heavy for that. They were okay for competition but once I stopped competing, they were sold or traded.

If you are content with the 38/357 class of cartridges, the L frame is fine. I prefer the 45 ACP, N frame, but… that is me. You do you.
